How to choose the right VPS specifications for different workloads?

I've noticed that when choosing a VPS, people often focus mainly on the monthly price or the amount of RAM. But I think the right specifications depend much more on what you actually plan to run.

For example:

  • A small website may not need much CPU or RAM.
  • A database-heavy application can benefit from faster storage and better CPU performance.
  • A Windows VPS may need more RAM depending on the applications being used.
  • Remote desktop workloads can behave differently depending on CPU, RAM, storage and network latency.
  • Development environments may need more CPU and memory if you're running multiple services.

Another thing that seems important is not looking at individual specifications in isolation. A VPS with 8 GB RAM isn't necessarily better than one with 4 GB if the CPU allocation or disk performance is poor.

When comparing VPS plans, I'd personally look at:

  1. CPU allocation and performance
  2. RAM
  3. SSD vs NVMe storage
  4. Network speed and bandwidth limits
  5. Datacenter location and latency
  6. Virtualization technology
  7. Backup options
  8. Support and uptime history

What specifications do you consider most important when choosing a VPS for a particular workload?
