Tech support is being phased out, may vanish by 2027.

    Or so they say.

Nah, I disagree. Even if a LLM gets to a point where it can do everything a human can (we are both so close and so far at the same time right now), customers still want the human touch.

Go back 10 years and look at how tech support was done. Then look at where we are today. Now imagine where we'll be in 2036 (if not sooner). That should give you a pretty good idea of where this is heading.

    Edit:
Look at the historical trend and extrapolate it to 2036.

Customers still want the human touch but a cold shoulder is what they get.

Dude, you're like that friend who just became vegan.

You don't need support because a) the problem won't happen, b) it fixes itself?

You have to be more specific to know wtf you're on about.

10 years ago chat bots that made you check the documentation before talking to a human still existed.

These two also hate vegans, I'm sure you'll be good friends.

The leap is huge, though. I wouldnt be surprised if by 2036 the split is something like 3% human involvement and 97% automation automated troubleshooting, self healing systems, automatic fixes, monitoring, deployment, rollback, etc.

Humans probably wont disappear completely, but their role could become a small fraction of what it is today. The human will still be there when automation reaches its limits but most routine support work may simply happen without a human ever getting involved.

Have you tried contacting the bigger hosting companies directly by email with your CV and a short introduction? Companies like Hetzner, OVH, netcup, DigitalOcean, Leaseweb, etc.

With 15+ years of experience in hosting and sysadmin roles, I think it would be worth sending them a direct application even if they dont currently have a specific position advertised. You never know what opportunity might come up.

  • Good luck job hunting

No guarantees but what hourly rate are you hoping for and what region are you based in?

I'm in Europe, my hourly rate really depends on a lot of factors, I adjust it depending on what kind of work it is as I don't like overcharging.
