Just a word of warning: we "all" crave those $7/year VPSes. Prices for those are partly based on a number of idlers or VPSes without high workload.
If everybody starts to use their idlers for these kind of purposes - science or not - it'd lead to a price increase (again) that we really don't want. Idlers are part of the businesscase and ecosystem.
kinda agree on this one. i don't get how people like OP think this is a good thing if you're not gain actual incentive to do it without looking a the bigger picture.

"just deploy BOINC bro" without proving anything that the compute resource poured into this project is actually useful is a bit iffy.
OP did say "I've contributed several hundred hours by running BOINC across many idlers this year alone" without showing off what did he get from it (really, not even a basic graph on a project that in-progress, what the project he contributed compute for?, what's the result?).
try comparing it to:
what did BOINC give? who's going to give me warranty that the hardware resources contributed into this platform IS NOT being used to do things i don't like / can't tolerate and i don't benefit from it? (like, figuring out certain protein squence to extreminate certain group of human population).

I had some cases when the node clearly was oversold (low CPU performance), but steal was always at 0%. It appears reporting steal to the guest is optional and is not always done.
It's displayed by default so a host would have to manually hide it in an attempt to hide overselling. In those cases, fuck 'em. If they're telling you you got no neighbors, treat it like you own the place.
I got shamed by an LLM once for asking about H@H. I was asking it if it has any ideas for applications I can run on my idlers, and I gave some examples including Tor, I2P, Freenet (Hyphanet), Monero nodes, and H@H. And it replied quoting H@H and said something like "wow well that's... unexpected".
What kind of crap data was that trained on. The internet is made for porn, lmao.

entire vps provider industry will collapse if everyone runs compute tasks on idlers.
