    I asked a very direct question: is the 1 Gbps bandwidth dedicated to my server, or is it shared/oversubscribed with other servers?

    Your answer explained that the server has a 1 Gbps uplink and that 1 Gbps is the maximum I could see on a speed test. I understand that already. What it does not tell me is whether the bandwidth behind that port is shared.

    A server can have a 1 Gbps NIC/port and still be connected to an oversubscribed uplink shared by many other servers. If that uplink becomes busy, the server may be capable of 1 Gbps but unable to actually achieve anything close to it.

    That distinction matters, and it is exactly why I asked the question the way I did.

    I’m not trying to be difficult, but the answer came across to me as somewhat evasive because a newer customer could easily interpret “1 Gbps port” as meaning they have 1 Gbps of dedicated bandwidth when that may not be the case.

    We have multiple upstreams and IX and peering ports from multiple providers

    And because we cant predict what path(s) your specific traffic will exit or enter from means that asking "is it dedicated or shared" is somewhat of an impossible question to answer

    So if you are asking "do we get a dedicated/reserved 1Gbps port/capcity to each and every single upstream/pni/ix connection all at the same time" the answer is no.

    If you are asking "will I always be able to max out my 1Gbps regardless of time of of day" then the answer yes, you will be able to always max out your port speed any time of the day

    We have also been on the forum a wee little while and we understand that a provider saying "dedicated port" doesnt mean dedicated in the same sense that you are explaining but more "unmetered with expectations to be able to use maximum capacity 24/7"

    Hopefully that helps clear up any confusion what "dedicated port" would mean in a multi upstream setup

    I understand your point, but there is some history behind the way I asked the question.

    I’ve been on this forum since 2013. Years ago I used to ask these questions very politely and professionally, and far too often I would get vague marketing answers instead of a direct answer to a direct technical question.

    One example was a provider advertising a 10 Gbps unmetered port along with a very attractive amount of resources. I questioned the bandwidth policy repeatedly because the offer did not make sense to me at that price. It took roughly six or seven exchanges before they finally stated that around 7 TB per month was what they considered normal usage, and that customers consistently exceeding that would be contacted about moving to another plan.

    That is exactly why I now press for clarification when wording can be interpreted more than one way.

    I was not asking whether a provider literally reserves the cumulative port capacity of every server 1:1 across every transit provider, IX and peering connection. I understand that is not how a provider with multiple upstreams, IX connections, and peering operates.

    What I wanted to know was much simpler: if I purchase a server advertised with a 1 Gbps port, should I reasonably expect to be able to use that 1 Gbps at any time, or is the network sufficiently oversubscribed that available throughput may fall substantially during busy periods?

    The provider eventually answered that question very clearly: they expect me to be able to max out the 1 Gbps port regardless of time of day. That was the information I was looking for.

    Maybe my wording was stronger than necessary, but after 13 years of watching terms such as “unmetered,” “dedicated port,” “1 Gbps,” and “10 Gbps” used very creatively by some providers, I would rather ask a question too directly than discover the real limitation after I have paid for the server.

    stating my previous experiences not saying that this provider is deceptive,

    I’ve been doing this long enough to understand how provider networks and uplink capacity work. I’m not suggesting that every server’s cumulative port speed has to be backed by a 1:1 dedicated upstream allocation.

    My current server has a dedicated 1G port. In most regions I can consistently reach around 800–900 Mbps, while in two particular regions I can barely get above 300–400 Mbps. I understand perfectly well what that tells me about routing, peering, congestion, and available capacity beyond the physical server port.

    So I’m not green at this. I was asking specific questions because I wanted to understand what I would actually be buying, not because I expected an entire provider network to be dedicated to one server.

    Judging from your previous statement, I came to two possible conclusions. On one scenario, I thought you're under influence of psychoactive drug, including the LLM AI (if applicable).
    But, let's get back on the topic.
    Your provider may reserve capacity for you, but that doesn't mean their upstream didn't oversell their capacity to some extent on certain routes.

    I’m considering moving my current dedicated server to one of your servers when my present quarterly term expires.

    My current server costs approximately $270 USD every 3 months ($1,080/year) and has the following specifications:

    • Dual Intel Xeon E5-2673 v3 processors
    • 64 GB RAM
    • 2 × 1 TB SSD drives
    • 1 Gbps network port
    • Unshared/dedicated network connection
    • Multiple IPv4 addresses
    • Ubuntu 24.04

    I’m interested in your server listed at $444/year with:

    • Intel Xeon E3-1270 v5
    • 64 GB RAM
    • 2 × 1 TB drives
    • 10 TB monthly traffic

    The price is very attractive, but I would like some clarification on the networking and hardware before ordering.

    Could you please confirm:

    • What is the network port speed: 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps, or something else?
    • Is the port dedicated/unshared to the server, or is the bandwidth shared with other customers?
    • Is the 10 TB traffic allowance combined upload/download, or primarily outbound traffic?
    • What happens after 10 TB is reached — is the connection throttled, suspended, or is there an overage charge?
    • Are the 2 × 1 TB drives SSD, SATA SSD, NVMe, or HDD?
    • Can the two drives be configured as RAID 1?
    • How many IPv4 addresses are included, and can additional IPv4 addresses be purchased?
    • Is DDoS protection included, and if so, what level of protection is provided?
    • Is the server a fully dedicated physical machine with no virtualization or shared CPU resources?

    My workload consists primarily of PostgreSQL databases, indexing/search services, Docker containers, web/API services, and related applications. I am not using the server as a high-bandwidth video streaming server.

    I’m mainly trying to determine whether this server would be a reasonable replacement for my current dedicated server while reducing the yearly cost.

    Zappie's network is pretty good. So, I wouldn't worry too much about the uplink being unreasonably congested. The main question is whether NZ is a reasonable location for you.
