Start selling vps / hosting - where do i begin?

wuifuwuifu Member

Hello,

I’m an SEO expert and I’m planning to start a web hosting business. I’m currently developing a custom AI-powered control panel, but I don’t have much experience with dedicated servers, VPS setup, RAM/CPU allocation, virtualization, or IP management.

Here’s what I think I’ll need:

A dedicated server
IPv4 addresses for VPS customers

What would you recommend to someone new to this field?

Where should I start, and what should I learn or set up first? Should I rent a dedicated server and set everything up myself, or should I start with a reseller solution?

I’d appreciate any advice. Thank you.

    1. Why don't you get the affiliate or reseller business?
    2. Do you have starting capital?
    3. What's the direction of your business? General purpose? AI? Game? Storage? Exotic location? Niche sector?

I’m getting a lot of traffic from Google about 5 million clicks.
    I have a monthly budget of $8,000 to $10,000.
A niche site is always best, but I can also create a website on Google for my company. I know all the Google techniques and I’m good at this.
To be honest, this will be a much more passive income for me.
If necessary, I can pay people to work for me.

@OP AI and new business: Very bad.

Why exactly do you want to build a business around something you don't understand?

Like... if I were a customer, why should I choose you over another company with trained personnel and experience?

Hm, can you tell me why?

Does AI speed things up? Yes.
Can AI produce bullshit? Also yes.

Time is money, so why shouldn’t I use AI?

Nothing is perfect; something can always break. I also know PHP very well, so I can create my own APIs with WHMCS / Vmware. AI simply helps me work faster.

Register a company in your country, Buy Dedicated Server, Buy Domain, Setup WHMCS with Stripe and BTCPayServer, Setup Virtfusion and Proxmox = Profit?

My honest opinion: try becoming affiliator. After a while, you'd understand which market you want to enter. Then, you could resell packages (this require knowledge about whitelabeling) and support ticketing. After that, start renting dedicated server to cater your client (this is where you'd need ASN, IP space, server provisioning, DDoS, etc). After knowing the niche, start purchasing the hardware and gradually move your existing customer to your owned nodes. Then, as you fill more racks, it may be a good idea to build your own datacenter. Then, gradually you lay more fibers to other IXP, you'd become transit providers. After grinding for a decade or two, you'd lay down $100K/KM fiber optic nodes across the globe.

Okay, this forum is a total waste of time.

    Money always talks.

If you're my client, then you can't talk to me.
But you can talk to my paid staff

OK, here is some actual well meant response: Hosting is a horribly saturated market. Profit margins outside of high class enterprisy services (which you 100% won't be able to provide - even if you did noone would trust it) are razor thin. At the point you employ someone your chances of just breaking even are like 1000% out of the window.

Administration/networking/specifically hosting also have very little (one could say no) overlap with SEO. You'd have virtually no idea what you are doing and trying to get an AI to do it will 100% predictably end in a disaster (because you still don't know what the fuck you are doing) and almost certainly in total loss.

TL;DR: Don't do it. Feel free to ignore this if you think you know better. It's not like it affects me one way or the other.

Yeah, you have no clue what the fuck you are doing. That's pretty much what i just said. These steps might become relevant when you have a functioning hosting business but that part is basically safe to not happen.

I’m not saying I’ll set up the hosting business on my own from a technical standpoint.

The owner of every company doesn’t have to know every aspect of the business from a technical standpoint. A restaurant owner doesn’t have to be a chef. What matters is hiring the right people and managing the business effectively.
