Help me choose: Ryzen 9/i9 (4GB RAM) vs Xeon Gold (8GB RAM) for $10 diff?

ispanyaispanya Member

Hey LET community,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma choosing between two VPS offers from local providers for a yearly contract. There is a $10 price difference between them, and I can't decide which route to go based on my workload.

My Workload:

  • A WordPress backend (API / Database)
  • A React project (website)
  • A custom desktop app auth/licensing system (requires fast response times)
  • 1-2 active Python / Discord bots running 24/7

The Offers (Yearly Paid):

Option 1: The Single-Core Beast ($32/year)

  • CPU: 2 vCPU (Ryzen 9 3970X or Intel i9-10920X equivalent)
  • RAM: 4 GB DDR4
  • Storage: 50 GB NVMe
  • Network: 10 Gbps port (Shared, obviously)

Option 2: The Resource King ($42/year)

  • CPU: 4 vCPU (Intel Xeon Gold)
  • RAM: 8 GB DDR4
  • Storage: 60 GB NVMe
  • Network: 2 Gbps port

My main concern is Uptime and Stability since the auth system and Discord bots cannot afford to go down.

Option 1 gives me insane single-core performance for fast auth requests, but I'm worried 4GB RAM might get tight with WP + Bots + Auth running together. Option 2 gives me double the RAM (8GB) and double the cores, but lower clock speeds (Xeon Gold).

Given the $10 difference, which one would you pick for this specific stack? Is 4GB RAM enough if I optimize the stack well, or should I just grab the 8GB Xeon Gold?

Thanks in advance!

If uptime, stability, and support are your top priorities, you may want to take a look at GreenCloudVPS's $45/year Budget KVM plans.

    https://greencloudvps.com/billing/store/budget-kvm-sale

    • 4 vCPU (EPYC Rome/Milan or Xeon E5 v4, depending on location)
    • 8GB RAM
    • 60GB SSD/NVMe
    • CPU and bandwidth vary by location

For your workload, I think it's a solid option in this price range.

He's not looking for a specific provider. He's asking about choosing between two plans for a provider he already picked.

4 GB should be fine unless those bots are crazy fat. I can even comfortably run bloated Java applications on 4 GB RAM. I'd go with option 1 and get the faster single-threaded performance.

No one on LowEndTalk can really comment on the uptime or stability of your local provider, especially since you didn't mention the provider's name.

That's why GreenCloudVPS was suggested earlier. I'd recommend exploring LowEndTalk a bit more you'll likely find some better offers.

    Hey LET community,

Mention the provider youll probably find a few people here that have had them

Assuming both providers are similar, it’s entirely dependent on whether 4GB ram is enough… Can’t you simply test the peak memory usage of your apps combined, by running them locally, or better, in a VM?
