Hosthatch promo HongKong VPS benchmark and review

When @hosthatch recently did a birthday promo I purchased a HongKong VPS, mainly for two reasons: (a) risk with hosthatch is very small as they usually provide decent VPS for not super-cheap ("$7/yr") but for a fair and low price.
And (b) because I wanted to experience a presumably decent quality HKG VPS.

Here is what I found out, sysinfo, processor and memory first, based on a bit over 30 runs.

Look at those numbers! What a joy (keep in mind that server is just $35/yr). And all the attractive flags are set, except for AVX. Also AES > 1 GB/s and RSA > 100 key pairs per second. Really nice.

Yessir, it does. Almost 40 MB/s in sync 4k/4t writing and pretty much 10 kIOps is really good in my books. Nothing to complain about, quite the contrary.

Europe - Quite decent results! Yes, I know, for us Europeans those numbers don't seem fast but just turn it around; It's quite rare to see about 60 Mb/s to HongKong! What's their "secret sauce"? GSL, pretty much everything towards Europe goes out via globalsecurelayer, occasionally followed by other decent carriers like e.g. zayo. Usually the route is via GSL to SGP, via marine fiber to Marseille and the NL, AMS where, if needed it's handed over to some other decent provider or to the target's network.
All in very nice, I'm very pleased.
As a side note: most secondary and tertiary targets were reached as well and usually even with similarly good results.

Asia / Oceania - Here it starts nice too but at some points it gets quite ugly. Let me start with the nice beginning: IN, Mumbai over 125 Mb/s is quite nice and so is SGP with over 300 Mb/s (and about 30 ms ping!). HongKong with almost 2.5 Gb/s and well below 1 ms ping is very nice, yes, but not really a surprise. What is a surprise, and a very nice one, is the fact that the VPS achieves well over 1 Gb/s that is, that the node has a beefy ethernet connection.
So much joy ... but it's rudely interrupted by the China mainland results. For a start of well over 10 test targets only four were reached at all and the best result us just barely over 50 Mb/s. From HongKong!
Let's have a closer look: (most) packets to CN mainland targets are handed over to PCCW (not a bad carrier per se) right away within the DC (Equinix it seems) by GSL. So far so more good than bad. Where it really turns ugly is the next step: PCCW hands it to TATA (a quite good carrier) who, for whatever reason, routes via JP to Los Angeles (!!! OK, I see, the idiocy of us-american carrier routing ...) where finally the chinese CERNET picks it up and routes it back across the Pacific. All in all almost 200 ms are wasted by that imbecile idiocy.
Funnily - or maybe I should say sarcastically - GSL does know how to do it correctly, just look at the results for fast-mirror.isrc.ac.cn where the packets are handed over to China Mobile right in HKG!
The Malaysia target is roughly in the SGP ballpark again (nice!), the Khambodia result is more CN mainland like, both Thailand targets fail completely, only one (of 4) Indonesia targets is reached but with a measly result, the JP targets however all show really decent results of about or even above 200 Mb/s and the Ozzyland targets also are reached and show decent results in the 85 - 90+ Mb/s range. NZ though is a bit disappointing with just a bit under 55 Mb/s.

Africa - Almost no target reached and the one that was reached isn't worth writing home about, sorry.

Americas - here a summary seems to be simple: East-Coast meeh, West-Coast quite OK in the 70ies and 80ies of Mb/s. Latin America between well reachable but meh results (BR, CL) and yuck, not even reachable (pretty much the rest, i.e. AR, EC, etc)

Summary / verdict: As a European I'm OK, maybe slightly happy with what I see, as a us-American on the west coast I'd be happy too but generally speaking - with some positive exceptions - connectivity is not the strong side of this HKG VPS, which however isn't hosthatch's fault but due to geography and politics I guess.
BUT: The processor and memory performance is really great and the disk performance is quite good as well.

Recommended albeit with location/region caveats which may or may not be a problem for you and your use case.
