Well, there are always cheaper options for Asia like Contabo and Leaseweb, frankly. Sometimes I point people to Leaseweb that need cheap APAC servers. But I hope the hardware and reliability make up for it. New orders in Singapore for example mostly are setup on EPYC 4584PX. Probably Tokyo too after existing space runs a bit lower.

Well, it's an unfortunate circumstance.. I feel bad for the guys that are affected by it, one of the most stressful situations you can be in if you sell hosting services. Have to keep in mind one bad day can kill a company. communication is key though.

  • Hi Mike!

I’m glad to see the offer you posted, and the service you provided before was honestly perfect for me. I even found that “live chat” vibe in ExtraVM’s ticket system, xD.

But based on my testing back then and our discussions in the ticket, after switching to GSL, the Los Angeles route really not being friendly to several Chinese ISPs.

Will there be any chance to see the old Los Angeles network again in the future? It definitely had higher latency, but packet loss was basically negligible and the bandwidth was very stable. To GSL, via NTT Tokyo, brings lower latency, but packet loss during peak hours makes HTTP streaming choppy or even drop the connection entirely.

It won't be, the old network and hardware is being phased out for reliability concerns and future rising prices. If you have an issue with connectivity/routing open a ticket and share MTRs and provide an IP and the ASN on your side. Connectivity to China can vary greatly depending on the province and ISP.

Right now from my end connectivity looks good to CT and CU in most areas, but is poor to CM.

Edit - It's hard to find IPs to test reliably, so if you can share a ipv4 prefix you're on and the province it would be really useful.

    Thanks for the reply!

Yes, it's terrible for CM, but the old network wasn't much better either. CM to the US is generally poor, so this probably can't be fixed. I completely understand.

For CT, the situation might be a bit more complicated. If you ping CT's datacenter IPs, they're affected by QoS less. But for CT's home broadband (behind CGNAT), the QoS is much more severe.

This phenomenon is most serious when routing through NTT Tokyo. Other VPS routing through NTT Tokyo, including Linode Tokyo/Osaka and Vultr Tokyo, all show similar issues. While regular latency might look okay, the actual access speed is already intolerably low or even intermittent. I've tested that BBR can barely mitigate this problem, and http-based websites can't use more aggressive congestion control (like KCP or Hysteria CC) either.

Unfortunately, CT to GSL now routes through NTT Tokyo...

Of course, if the other not live in China, I'd still recommend ExtraVM without hesitation. Thank you for your consistently impeccable service!

    Hello summoners,

While this thread is from last month, and the codes in the original thread are not active anymore, I wanted to share this -

Here is a discount code (3 uses only) that applies to Tokyo, Japan and gives 50% off for the 2GB RAM, 3GB RAM, and 4GB RAM plans. Once it has been used 3 times, it will not return.
    Code: tokeyoh
    https://extravm.com/vps#tokyo

Here is a 30% off code for the Dallas location as well.

Missed this. Any chance of more discount code for Tokyo (maybe less than 50%)?
