Alexhost - New location: we want to hear your opinion

  • @alexhost said: The problem here is, you buy it and a few other people, but are people willing to pay for something like this in Europe with high ping? Is it worth it? Are they willing, for example, to have 100Mbps, 500Mbps in Nigeria or Hong Kong and the like? If we do 1Gbps, the price can't be cheap. Due to RAM costs and connectivity in Asia, it's not exactly cheap.

Okay, i see it as follows:
If i simply don't care and want the cheap option, i'll go always with OVH, Hetzner or some other "big player". Their prices are simply too good and not possible to reach. But the point is that due to their location all those servers fall under different harsh rules regarding bureaucracy. Also in Switzerland things have changed and server-operators with a certain amount of users have to keep records of everything.
And even if you are a company that doesn't care for privacy of users the whole bureaucracy and controlling makes costs. Enormous costs. In Germany it is even obligatory to hire someone who has oversight over the data. This is completely bonkers.
And basically all other countries in Europe are going in that direction.
Also Moldova, which you also offer in your lineup will at some point become consolidated in their strive to enter European Union.
I recently got a message through Hetzner that the security services of Germany have scanned my server (and the apps on it!) for security flaws and they informed me about an CVE. This is shocking honestly.
And due to the ongoing political conflicts you also as an European should not engage in business in Russia at all otherwise you might end up being accused of spying or what not. Africa is completely out of the picture of those "grand" political problems and most countries there are also very lean on those things simply because they don't have any "experts" in government that could realize such forms of bureaucratic outreach.
I see Africa as the future bastion of internetfreedom. At least for some time.

@oloke said: In all cases latency to Europe is over 100ms, to US almost 200ms and to Asia even going as high as 300ms (mostly because it's routed via Europe anyways).

A little bit over 100ms from Europe i see as acceptable.
As an European it's in my opinion way better than having a VPS in SG or South America or something like that.
For communication protocols like Matrix, nostr or whatnot this is okay.
I don't want to host a gameserver in Africa.

Okay, if you want genuine feedback - personally I would only consider buying your service with current pricing if it was some unusual location that's hard to get for the price.

    1 vCPU
    1536 MB RAM
    10 GB NVMe
    100 Mbps unmetered
    1 IPv4 and 1 IPv6 address

For almost $5/mo on U1 promo. ($4/m when paid yearly)

in most locations it's OOS already so one can buy U2 promo for over $11/mo.

Locations in Central Asia (Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan or Kazakhstan), East Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Egypt, Mauritius - possibly most realistic atm), South America (all except Chile) would be of interest to me personally.

I think those are the locations where you could be competitive price-wise.

You already got some feedback from other sources and it seems on Telegram - Singapore was most asked for, on Nodeseek Hong Kong and Singapore, on LES hard to say yet, but probably also SG. Here, Singapore seems to also be rivaling Croatia. So I think it expansion to Singapore or Hong Kong would be of most benefit to you at the current moment.

Not that I would buy it anyway.

$10/m price point should've exclude most of mjjs. But, they would scalp $1-2/m server, especially when it has unmetered bw. Thus, making server at that price point unsustainable

Japan is interesting. Which plans you like to see? How much would you be willing to pay for quality? But Japan is not DMCA ignored for certain content.

as you are main DMCA free VPS provider on the market, i suggest you expand your DMCA product line to Asia, better in Singapore,HK or Japan, if you have problem on the DMCA part, then try Malaysia.
