How many servers do you have and how much you spend per year?!

Hello,

I like to ask this though question in anticipation of black friday !
So this the 2025 edition

So... I currently own 14 servers for a cost of 370€ / year
That's a bit more than last year :#

What about you ?
This could be a good thing to avoid compulsive shopping during black friday :)

I prefer not to answer this question. :#

In all seriousness, around 40 VPS servers currently.
Last time I calculated, the average price I pay for each was around $2/mo.
You can do the math, i'm too afraid. :D

  • Never quantify either the count or cost, it will put a damper on your BF spending. 😢

  • Real servers: few hundred $ per month
    LET: around $100 per month
Colocation/LIR: $0, wish I had a reason to spend money on those things, seems interesting

  • i've done a major clean-up and now only have 6 left (1 windows server).

    Monthly billing: 1 server, $3.50/month.
    Yearly billing: 7 servers, $73.11+€48/year.
    Triennial billing: 3 servers, $299/3y; 1 email service, $3/3y.

There are also 1 ASN and 5 domains, whose prices change every year.

  • each region a server, i think i should build myself a server and host it locally to cut down expenses 😰

  • lukast__lukast__ Member, Megathread Squad

I excluded servers I don't plan to renew, and the actual values may be slightly different depending on, for example, currency fluctuations:
Around 30 servers (2 dedis), each with a dedicated IPv4, for around 360€/yr. (In total: around 60 cores, 128 GB RAM, 2.5 TB SSD, and 13 TB HDD).
Actually used for something I use (excluding OS and YABS): around 3% of the HDD space, around 0.5% of the SSD space, and around 5% of the RAM.

Pro tip put all in a spreadsheet, have one column with their price in the currency you pay, in another column, use the built in currency conversion to see all prices in your local currency or USD, auto updated.

    Very good for idler overview.

What did you keep if i may ask ? you were always looking for beefy and performant server if i remember correctly

I always knew that yoursunny was a reasonable man after all.
How much does it cost to get an ASN nowadays ?

  • emghemgh Member, Megathread Squad

    I think 28 servers, 26 VMs and 2 dedis.

The dedis are 90+% of total costs.

The ASN registration was a $7/one-time Black Friday dealz.
Nowadays RIPE tax is €50/year charged to the LIR, so that LIR charged us $75 in 2024 and we hope for the same amount in 2025.
Possessing the ASN enables us to request free IXVMs, which are small servers connected to Internet eXchange Points, in various regions.

It looks fun. But I find that a bit expensive to play with.
That's maybe what i'll buy if there is a deal during bf.

    Hi,

most of you are private people, right?

So, what are you actually doing with this mass of servers / resources?

I mean i have privately running a 7days2die server playing with friends. Same server is hosting a satisfactory gameserver. They run on one of our epyc VPS's.

Additionally i have a nextcloud server as VPS with some TB of data for family stuff to have a higher chance not to loose them in case what ever happens locally.

But what are you all doing with 20-60 servers? o_O

Pure fun having many and feeling good? Or is there some real, "senseful" reason behind this masses? Are you all running your private monitoring project on your 60 servers in 20 locations to monitor... your 60 servers in 20 locations? :>

No offense of course, everyone can do with his time and money what ever he/she/it wants but i am just curious what this amount of servers could be used for in a useful way.

  • I used to go crazy with personal servers to host all sorts of stuff, until a couple of years ago. My peak was 42 servers between dedicated and virtual. Then I started to get rid of most of them a little per time both because I didn't have much time to maintain them all and also to cut costs. Now I only have these for personal use:

    • Kimsufi dedicated server for several apps
    • Hetzner VPS for mail server
    • Netcup VPS for uptime monitoring
    • Tietokettu VPS for VPN
    • NovaCloud storage VPS for Restic backups
    • NovaCloud VPS for the high performance backend for Nextcloud Talk (video calls)

However I might cancel the storage VPS with NovaCloud, not sure yet. No problems with the server, but I got it as second destination for my backups, and now I got a lot more credits from Storj for my open source work, so I can just use Storj.

At the moment I don't plan on getting any new servers

Most of the time when I had up to 40+ servers, I was using them to learn new things. I set up Kubernetes clusters in many different ways, and also tried out Cassandra, Ceph, and lots of other things. It was really just a lot of experimenting. Only a few of those servers were ever used for real apps or actual tasks.
