If RAM is twice what it should be, your cheap plans are half the RAM. I've seen these cheap plans at 1 core, 1GB RAM, 10GB SSD - do 20 if you can afford it though. Special slim versions of Linux can fit in 512MB or even 256MB but you're sacrificing a lot to get there and it's not a normal cheap server any more.
Yeah, true — history repeats itself. Just waiting for the day we can tell our grandkids: “Back in my day, you could get a VPS for $1 and 64GB RAM for €85…” 😅
Maybe this would finally give LE providers enough incentive to ditch DDR4 and upgrade to DDR5
There's going to be an avalanche of cheap hardware once AI bubble bursts.
I bought like 6 kits of RAM during Amazon Prime Days the other week. Prices were like $20+ higher than September for 2x16GB kits. I saw the news about RAM prices going up for at least a year. The good thing about RAM is the lifetime warranty, so always buy up when at cheapest.
DDR5 RAM might be cheaper but rest of the hardware is significantly more expensive
Does anyone have a graph of pricing? This is crazy! I feel like some listings I was looking at a few days ago are already up $3 - $4/GB!
Edit:
I can't figure out how to embed this, but pricing is insane: https://imgur.com/a/gwJdUOn
Thanks for all suggestions, we still looking for hardware supplier who have a lot of stock and want to get rid of it.

RAM might be seen as expensive but over a 2-3 year period it wont drop in value that much in my experience so far compared to other computer parts. Compare that 64GB stick for 80 euro, you likely can sell it for 50-60 down the line, but now buy a CPU like AMD EPYC 7742 for 700 euro today and in 3 years it will sell for 200-300.
DDR5 will be the big loss.
You can pack significantly more chickens (more than double based on GB6) in newer servers though. The cost (including power usage and colo space) per VPS could be the same or even lower.
Overall, you are right. However, new servers has bigger entry price (except Ryzen-based). So i can get AMD Turin with 2TB DDR5 RAM but it would need 10-20k€ and i have an idling machine until it solds out.
