VMware

Is anyone aware of a VMware module that does not require a Vcenter server? eg will work with just the hypervisor/Esxi ( Free )?
Just looking into options.

  • You can run VMware free without a VCenter server.

  • I know you can, but for most api based tasks, eg to use via WHMCS you need Vcenter server.

    Can Always use SSH?

  • hmmm not sure, could look into it, of course you can enable ssh on your VMware hypervisor... might need a clever coder.

There is a well developed api that you can use.
There is also a ready made appliance based on *nix that you can download and instead of using vcenter for windows

  • Great, thanks for the info.

  • By the way, you need a commercial license for doing business related stuff with VMware. Just saying.

  • anyone using puppet to deliver VMware

  • Puppet Enterprise can help. With its integration with VMware vCenter

and of course vCenter costs money :(

To be accurate, VCenter is free but only works with licensed vmware hosts.

  • You can get a free license for ESXi and it will run without a vCenter server.

  • is it easy to deploy new vm without the management bits? seems that VMware might be good, but most people use OVZ, KVM, or XEN for VPS deployment. is this about being able to instantly spin up VPS via WHMCS, rather than the cost or reliability of VMware?

  • Enable tech support SSH on the ESXi machines, and grab the VMA virtual image. Stick the VMA on any host node, and you have pretty much full control over anything you want via command line.

Best think we ever did ...

You need a paid license to provide service according to the licensing docs.
Something really nice with the vcenter installation is the template system.

  • thanks all some really good info, looking in to puppet now.

Mind pointing where in the license that was? I must have missed it.

    @tchen
The free version goes together with the 60 day evaluation license.

    Thanked by 1tchen
  • If you don't feel like installing a vCenter on a Windows, you can use VMware vCenter Server Appliance image for fast vCenter deployment. It only takes about 10 mins at most.
