LF cheap but good DirectAdmin shared hosting for 1 small WordPress personal blog (I'm not so techie)

I just discovered LowEndTalk and couldn't believe how cheap these DirectAdmin shared hosting plans are.

For now it's only gonna be for one new small WordPress personal blog. From experience this won't go past 1.5 GB of storage. I'm not particular with locations, I put all my sites behind CloudFlare.

I'm currently on cPanel shared hosting that will expire next year and from reading around here I'm now thinking of migrating my existing site to DirectAdmin as well, and stay over the long haul.

What I'm look for:

  • The cheapest plan possible B)
  • Hopefully, a hosting company with industry experience of maybe 10 years or longer. Nevertheless, a good track record!
  • Good customer support. I'm not so techie. I can learn a bit. But I need support who can be patient with normies like me :# Or who can at least point me in the right direction.
  • Easy WordPress installer :)

So far I got:

  • Namecrane
  • HostBrr
  • SimpleSonic
  • HostKoala
  • HostSlim

Thanks!

+1 for NameCrane, I pay like $8/year and I host 2 websites on it.

Namecrane for the win. Been using them for the last two-ish years.

Then definitely not NameCrane as others already mentioned.
In my case, FTP stops working every time I try to connect, and after a few messages, support just said it's "my problem" and closed the ticket without fixing anything and answering my last message.

I'm also looking for something, planning to migrate from myw.pt. Thanks for mentioning HostBrr, I actually forgot about them. I have a DirectAdmin storage box there for backups, and it's been so hasslefree that I barely even remember it's running. So i guess I will go with them.

Brrrr for the win, mby they are slow on answering tickets (good customer support and low cost usually are not going together...), but so far in my 1 year with them never needed to ticket in (im using cpanel shared hosting 10 GB @ $5 USD/y i think code still works)..

  • Thanks everyone!

Would you say that like me, you're also not that proficient with this stuff?

With both the two "shared" hosts I've had, I had maybe a couple of times I was told that the thing I'm asking of them is beyond the scope of their support, which I totally get. But they've usually tried to point me in the right direction. Sometimes I tend to ask a lot of questions, which could be annoying I imagine, but if they say it's beyond their scope then I'd respect that.

I guess it's what forums like this are for. The silver lining perhaps is that I take notes and learn along the way (I hope!). And from experience, once the initial set up is done, I rarely open cPanel/DirectAdmin anyway. I've never had to FTP.

How slow is slow? Are they usually slow?

Also, is that really cPanel @ $5 USD per YEAR?? Damn...

My current host is USD 16 per year and I thought that's a steal but I see these DirectAdmin hosts and think they're too good to be true, still can't get over it :D Is there a catch here? I see that DirectAdmin is way cheaper than cPanel, is that it?

Are LET users mostly programmers/IT or some sort? For those who are not (like me), I really wanna hear your thoughts! :)

Here the cheap hosting comes most of the time with little and/or arrogant support.

  • Whatever you do, make sure you back up in places other than using hosting services.
