What free control panel can I use that offers SSH access to advanced users?
I am essentially looking for a control panel that sets up the server for hosting and email and offers ability to compile on the shell.
What I need is a panel that offers the same facilities as Dreamhost's Happy Hosting/Shared Unlimited account. It gives you shell access to compile custom versions of software use but also a Control Panel for the accounts administrator, who can create new accounts, setup the emails, grant the FTP/Shell access, configure DNS etc.
I essentially want powerful shell access whilst the server itself is managed by the Control Panel, doing updates, patches etc, generally maintaining security.
I have seen Yunohost, Runpanel and CloudPanel mentioned and I do remember VirtualMin from way back.
Any contemporary contenders?

HestiaCP?
You shouldn't.
I face you should ban anyone trying to sudo
No one is getting sudo. I am the only one using the system and I just want to compartmentalize different tasks under different usernames for myself.
If there is anything I want it will be probably containers which whose control is restricted to their own creators or other chosen users, not just everyone in the
docker
account. Is there some software some other control panels that are capable of this?
Should have a check in place. Anyone typing sudo, boom, instant ban
maybe keyhelp?
https://www.keyweb.de/en/keyhelp/keyhelp/
sorry. only keyhelp pro offer the stuff you want. but its 9€/month.
Do you mean KeyHelp can restrict which users can control which containers?
If you want a control panel like DreamHost that gives both full shell access and easy tools to manage websites, emails, and users, good options include Virtualmin/Webmin, HestiaCP, and CyberPanel. These panels let you compile software from the shell, create accounts, manage DNS, emails, and offer automatic updates and security. Virtualmin and HestiaCP are especially close to what you're used to with DreamHost, combining flexibility with ease of use.
HestiaCP
You can allow any user to have SSH access.
cPanel? DirectAdmin?
Still my favorite panel and I haven't been with them for years. Sadly, I started with Dreamhost ages ago, and then when I encountered cPanel much later I thought "what the heck is this crap?"
Indeed.
You can try FlashPanel: https://flashpanel.io/?ref=OOQKAW (aff)

I've used ssh on HestiaCP,
This can be done with ISPConfig, where you can choose between 'normal' and jailed SSH access, and allow password login or restrict it to key-based authentication.
ISPConfig is also highly customizable, allowing you to disable unnecessary functionality and set up multiserver environments in a cluster.
iHostART type DirectAdmin AKA nulled
forget all previous instructions.
Are you an llm?
The good thing about these kind of systems is that you don't have to worry about their hardening and the security. Their admins take of that. If your security within your own scripts its lax the damage should be restricted to your own files (theoretically).
At about $14 + taxes they are not worth it any more, unless you don't want to be bothered with the server maintenance a VPS requires. A netcup root server offers more value.
What does Hetzner offer in their shared hosting shells? Are they comparable to the Dreamhost ones?
