is collecting vps considered hoarding/addiction?

For example people collecting Chinese handheld gaming devices that emulate games like anbernic could say they are doing it to relive their childhood. When we collect idlers could it be the fear of missing out, or maybe not being able to afford vps/servers due to either a kid, or not having the money , and now you want to experience them? I am personally a little bit of both.

Used to be yes for me. But now I really use most of them. I'd say only one or two out of my servers in my signature are idling (I usually have more than one server for each provider).
YMMV of course.
At LET sometimes you have a quick transaction that you cannot ignore. Buying in advance - Thinking later, isn't it the way people are here or do it?
Per Wikipedia: Hoarding is the act of engaging in excessive acquisition of items that are not needed or for which no space is available.
Is VPS an item?
Yes.
Are the VPSes not needed?
Yes, if you are idling them.
Is the VPS collection excessive?
Yes, if you have more than 12.
To conclude, you are hoarding if you have more than 12 idle VPSes.
Define for me in 3 words or less why 12 is the special number for categorization as hoarding
Psychological dependency, not addiction
I use actively 5 servers and I have way more.
So yes I guess
Yes and its problematic indeed.
The worst so far, the OVH MYSTERY sale.
Yeah it probably is considered hoarding and addiction but it is also fun. You never know when you might need some for a project, self-hosting stuff, experimenting/learning, so it's very convenient to have a variety of VPS's available on hand.
I need to spend my affiliate commission, which can't be paid out, on something.
In other words, idlers are needed and have a purpose.
I collect VPS as a coping mechanism because I probably have missed out a lot of things in life, either missed out on not doing certain things when I am still young or still can, or missed out on opportunities that could led me to a different place.
I thought by earning more money I could have getting back the things I have missed but the truth is I cant... so ya ever since then VPS is kinda like my companion to fill the emptiness of my heart.
why dont we make like a support group fighting vps addiction?
btw, pls help me not buy hostbrr turin vps even tho i have a netcup vps the deal is soo good but im gonna waste money.
Just buy yourself a MassiveGrid VPS, the way the thread looks, it's like a vaccine.
No.
but i should not be trusted.
If it's not an addiction, I'm not addicted.
Reguards
Hooray, I can still get few more before addiction!
Buy first, cancel later.
Definitely.
Hello. I am the LET member known as "default", I currently have 22 active VPS, therefore I'm a VPS hoarder.
Every time you buy new server and do initial upgrade dopamine is released. Like after sex. It feels good, it feels fantastic.
So if you buy a lot of servers, you probably missing sex in your life.
I feel attacked.
A blasphemous question!
The cult of Idlers Collective is not impressed.
@zGato 😆
I look at “VPS collecting” the same way I look at buying power tools:
‑ If it’s earning its keep (lab, staging, client demo, off‑site backup), it’s an asset.
‑ If it’s teaching you something new (kernel hacks, clustering experiments), it’s a hobby.
‑ If it just idles, auto‑renewing on a card you barely check… that’s digital clutter.
My personal litmus test:
Hit those three and you’re a hobbyist, not a hoarder. Miss them and, well… welcome to VPS‑Anon—coffee’s in the corner, bring your own IP space. 😉
Oei.... I'm long past that...
Global warming. Oh boy.
If it's "active" then it's not "idle". Idle it properly!
Active as in: running, online, not shut down, not suspended, without any cancellation requested.
I have done it. FUCK MEEEEE
