    ceph is great.

imagine if this were a RAID failure - you'd be facing a nightmare without backups.

We install a single NVMe in each server.
No Ceph, no Ceph explosion in our face.
No RAID, no RAID failure without backups.

And that single NVMe promises to never gonna give you up and never let you down?

The NVMe is at 5% or less, so that it's pretty safe.
Moreover, if we let other researchers use the server, we tell them that they need to save important files on their laptops instead of the servers.

That's reasonable. I personally wouldn't use Ceph in a semi or fully dedicated environment either.

From a hosting or business perspective, Ceph is just more practical when dealing with large-scale, multi-tenant environments where redundancy, availability and scalability are crucial. I especially love it when we need to live migrate VMs for maintenance - fast, virtually zero downtime for customers.
In a setup where resources are primarily dedicated to a single user or a small group like yours, managing Ceph's overhead may not be worth it.
Of course, handling issues isn't always easy, as seen with what PH/PH24 encountered. However, in the end, the data remained intact, which, to me, is a strong reason to use Ceph.

    Hey everyone,

First of all, I really appreciate the patience and the discussions here. I know outages are always frustrating, and we take every issue seriously to ensure the best service possible.

As some of you mentioned, the recent downtime was related to a CEPH issue that affected a part of our infrastructure. The good news is that everything has been fully restored, and we've taken additional measures to further improve stability.

For those interested in the details, we’ve published a full incident report here:
    https://prepaid-host.com/de/blog/incident-report-en

I also want to say thank you to everyone who shared constructive feedback and insights on CEPH and infrastructure best practices. We always strive to improve and appreciate the input from the community.

If anyone is still experiencing issues, feel free to reach out via support, and we’ll be happy to assist.

    Best regards,
    Christopher | Prepaid-Host.com

It's just been one problem after the other with this host.

If it's not IO issues it's high steal or alternatively it's down entirely
