Contabo's Indian Servers – A Budget Dream or a Frustrating Gamble?

I recently found myself on a mission to get an Indian server, and after what felt like an endless search, I landed on Contabo. The offer seemed too good to ignore—32TB bandwidth, a 200 Mbps connection, all for just $8 a month. Sounds like a steal, right? Well… yes and no.

Let’s start with the good stuff. The pricing is unbeatable for the bandwidth you get. It’s rare to find such a generous offer at this price point, especially if you specifically need an Indian server. On paper, everything looked perfect. But as with most budget-friendly deals, there was a catch. Or rather, several.

The Speed Struggle
Even though the plan promises a 200 Mbps connection, hitting even 100 Mbps feels like an achievement. If you’re expecting a consistent full-speed experience, brace yourself for disappointment.

The Setup Nightmare
The real frustration started after I made the payment and got my server. For three straight days, I couldn’t even get it to work. Constant errors, no clear solutions, and a painfully slow support response. I sent screenshots, emailed multiple times, and practically had to argue my way into getting someone to actually look at my issue. Turns out, the problem wasn’t on my end—it was something they had to fix. But getting there was exhausting.

Before you ask, "Why not just reinstall the OS?"—I tried. Every time I attempted it, I ran into more errors. No easy way out.

Random Downtime
Once things were finally up and running, I thought I was in the clear. But nope. The server kept going offline every few hours. It only takes about five seconds to reboot, but having to manually do that over and over? It gets old real fast.

Support Needs a Revamp
Here’s one major flaw—Contabo does not have a live chat system. For a service like this, where real-time support is crucial, waiting over 24 hours just for a reply to a ticket is brutal. And once they do respond, it takes even longer to explain the issue and get an actual fix. If you're in a hurry, good luck.

Final Thoughts
Would I recommend Contabo? If you need an Indian server at dirt-cheap pricing and can deal with the occasional hiccups, sure. The bandwidth allocation is one of the best I’ve seen at this price. But if reliability, smooth setup, and quick support are your priorities, you might want to think twice.

In short, Contabo feels like one of those budget airlines—you get where you need to go, but the journey? Well, that’s another story.

30 second search about Contabo will tell you everything you need to know and more

    tldr complete shit stay away

  • That spec (must have been 4C plan) for $8 is probably a loss leader so it would hinge on self service experience such as os reloads like you mentioned.

Was it causing an error mid operation or just failing to even begin? Makes one wonder if it's just memory capacity planning gone wrong and no one rebalanced you to different node.

  • Their garman-quality servers are oversold and throttled, which allows them to offer you a low price. Late answers from unmanaged providers are expected. But 24 hours is too long, even for an unmanaged provider. I've used their service in Singapore for a long time before, and when they began overselling their servers, I migrated to another provider. I used to receive a response within a few hours. Because I used their larger plan, either tickets were treated with better priority or they dismissed a few more support personnel to decrease server costs. so that they can offer more cheaper price :#

Contabo is good for germans or who can speak german. Anything else - spin the wheel and enjoy the game.

  • 32TB or 1000TB it doesn't matter because you'll never use it up with Contabo's oversold network.

  • Its only about the 32TB. If they would shrink to 1 or 2 TB, there would be no contabo at all.

  • We already know Contabo is bad, but why the AI-generated essay? It’s annoying to read.

I have a Singapore server on Contabo and it goes down weekly. If that's anything to compare, India is probably the same.

If your app/service/use case isn't very important, and you can deal with some random, unexplained periods of downtime that are 5-30 minutes long, it's an excellent deal.

Hey, what's the new provider do you use in SG now?

    Thanks!

Unfortunately Contabo is increasing prices for their old VPS by 20%! So they introduce new VPS with much lower specs (RAM, disk space) at their regular price and increase prices of the previous models. They say in their price update newsletter it's because of higher costs of operating the old systems. Makes you LOL. Same old hosts with the new VPS!

I'm using a dedicated server from OVH. I have had three VPS with them before. Due to poor performance, I have purchased a dedicated server, set up LXD there, and created 3 VM. This way, I'm spending 50% less than Contabo and getting 90% better performance. I have another VPS in @speedypage , which is also performing well. I have also used @kuroit they are awesome.
