I think the issue is that I’m using Docker’s local DNS because the connected container has to resolve names of other containers to IPs

dperson/openvpn recommends setting the container’s DNS to Google/whatever and not use the local Docker one but then I lose the above ability (or more specifically, containers that use the network of this vpn client container lose that ability)

Anyway, installed Gluetun and replaced OpenVPN with it (still using OpenVPN as the protocol however), if it occurs again I’ll simply reconfigure Gluetun to use WireGuard instead

Sometimes I found it to be easier to just do stuff another way than it is to actually understand and solve issues. Pro tip

can't you connect all docker containers up through a docker network?

I tried running this script twice on my texas vps and it borked the vps for nearly an hour. All ports showed closed and couldnt ssh in. Restart did nothing. Any clue why?

sounds like your provider nullrouted you, was it charityhost by chance?
