Should I get an dedicated server or multiple VMs from different providers?

Hey you all lovely people.

I was looking at my current hosting needs and the bill.

Right now I have a need for
1. Game server, mostly minecraft/ram hog server games or virtual machines running some other software.
2. Storage (nextcloud & plex) server approx 10TB, etc.
3. Docker/Portainer hosting for random different projects.

Technically it would be possible to install all this on one server using for ex. Pterodactyl/Pelican panel and hosting the different needed services there while the data can exist in a mounted disk volume.

How would you accomplish this and with what providers?
In the end such a server would not be the cheapest as the modded minecraft server like to use 20+GB of ram while multiple players are online.
Would prefer an EU location as it would be "close".

Putting all your eggs in one basket leaves to long term trouble if you do not have proper disaster recovery plan in place. Otherwise YoLo

  • I would have one dedicated server with DDoS Protection for Game server,
another dedicated Server for Storage, and another dedicated server would work well for virtual machines and docker. It all comes down to what your budget it is.

  • My best suggestion, if you know what you're doing then go for just getting a single dedicated server.

But ideally I would just get separate ones just for the support perk that companies offer just in case I ever need them when I'm unavailable, let's say you've gone for like a vacation or something and you can't access your computer. You could just contact your provider and depending on how much broad support they provide, they could help you solve issues in situations where you're unable to troubleshoot the same issues.

  • Thanks for your input.
Currently I am browsing Hetzner's server auction.
A lot of these would not offer any redundancy in case of HDD failure but I can life with that as the data stored would be a secondary backup of my offline data stored in two separate locations.
    https://www.hetzner.com/sb/#drives_count_from=3&drives_size_from=8000&drives_size_to=16000&ram_from=64
Ideal budget would be around the price range like there 60-80€ including VAT.

    Hi,

we do offer fully configurable VPS and VDS that would cover your needs. You can ( and should ) test them up to 48h for free before you choose a paid plan.

Hosting would be in france or germany.

Alternatively, hetzner is for sure not a bad pick for your usecase if you dont need any possibility for up or downgrades.

Perhaps a dedicated server running a raid setup and then keeping offsite backups on a VM would be the best of both worlds for your use case.

just split into a few big and small vpses with raid10 and call it a day.

either get more vps for backup, or use vps from providers who provide backup slots like crunchbits.

This CPU with additional HDD this will get you x5-10 the performance of any Hetzner auction server for a similar price

Then if you wanted get a cheap yearly VPS for backups from @host_c

First and foremost: Fuck Plex, get Jellyfin. Whats your bill at the moment? How many MC players do you have? Whats your total RAM consumption?

  • I prefer dedicated, why?
Because you own you rules, just simple as that.
And, if u change ur mind and wanna use it for something else its easy to adapt. But dont forget the pricetag too, it should be cheaper than many vms on different server

I'd want multiple services ideally from different providers. Whether some of those services were dedicated instead of vps depends on what I was running on each.

Life sucks when everything is on one box and it's inaccessible, been there done that etc.
