Rescued two kittens that were orphaned because their mom was poisoned by someone days after giving birth to them. Never thought they’d survive, but somehow they did. A year later, they made us smile and brightened our lives more than anything. The two had a unique bond and were inseparable. Then, one of them went missing a few days ago. The other never stopped looking, even more than us. At the slightest movement outside, it runs to the door and meows to see if he has returned. And the way it spends all day at the window looking outside is even more heartbreaking. I just hope he’s fine. Guess it’s not touching but just a sad (but real) story.

A really great initiative, I would love to win but since @Verasel is giving me work, I really appreciate that. I am also probably in my lowest point maybe but things will sure work out to slowly get it better 🙂. But it's great finding forums for me and LET was my first where I started actually talking with people, and will do so on too. 🫡

Good luck, it's always an amazing thought to give back something to the community. I wouldn't consider myself as poor as i have a place to live and food on my table thanks to my dad and i am trying to have him retire with some business to run(it's still under drafts and hopefully i will reach there, fingers crossed) I have learned many things from LET and other forums and people including vlad, perry, dustin, Francisco, and many more too count. I am thankful for such kind gestures i see here and these threads makes me to see the LET again more like a community rather than a marketplace. Kudos to verasel mah guy earning hate from a thread and praise from another. Last but not least i am always grateful to our Dinoman for staying awake making everyone happy it's a hard thing to achieve believe me.

Note: Please don't consider this as an entry i am not replying here for the GA, just had to share my thoughts and perhaps i am tad bit drunk........

broooo, how? i lost $250 by accident once (cash), and i also got my cards skimmed on 2 occassions, and never got refunded, lmao. the bank just replaced the cards obviously, but they played dumb and i never chased it up any further because it's not worth your time sometimes... but 2k is a big amount....

i also dont count the amount of money i lost on designers and developers, that would be ridiculous. this is why it's important to have a list of good/trusted designers/developers and admins, tbh.

@protocols is one of them (a sysadmin), and @cainyxues a designer, etc. so we do definitely have a lot of good people here thankfully!

thank you for paying it forward @Dazzle. <3

  • We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville? I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we? Oh, yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones...

Without getting too much into detail and sharing my personal story... When I first read @Verasel 's post in that thread it really reminded me much of my past, upbringing and childhood.... Current situation maybe...

I've been rich, I've been poor. I've been hurt, I felt lost, I was broken. I felt invincible , I felt fragile Maybe still am all of the above.

But I have always felt blessed. Blessed for having a loving family, going above and beyond to give me (us) a better future, putting everything aside for their family.

Poverty is nasty thing. But never let it get you down. There are hardships... Some you might never overcome. But try to stay positive , open, love and help people you encounter. Together we stay strong.

Even if you live in poverty right now, this doesn't define you as a human being. Try to be the best version of yourself, no matter what your circumstances are.

Also, don't be afraid to ask for help, when needed. You'll find there are plenty of people willing to. Have no shame, again, it doesn't define you as a person.

And history might repeat. When I started my own family... We've been poor, We've been rich. We endured hardships.

But above all, we have always felt blessed.... Blessed to be alive. Blessed with each other and the love we found from the people surrounding us.

Most of all I thank my mum and dad for that. They taught me to shut up, stop whining and work my ass off in trying to accomplish what I want.

That's one thing I hope to pass on to my own kid. Work hard, treat others well... No matter what, you'll be alright, and always, always remain able to enjoy the little things in life.

Spring is coming... Do you hear the birds chirping at 6am when you go for a walk?

    Love is in the air.

    Stay strong. Never lose hope.

We deleted the frontpage of the high school website and got banned from school computers for a month.

It was 2004, we were a computer genius at the school and spent all of spare time after lunch at the computer lab.
The school offers 1MB hosting space for students, which supports HTML and ASP.
The control panel is horrible: we can only upload one file at a time.

We found a script called Dm45.asp that displays a nice "file manager" interface in the webpage.
It allows uploading a ZIP archive, which is then extracted on the server.
It also allows editing files directly in the browser.
We found this script very powerful, and we no longer need to split our website into multiple accounts because files uploaded via Dm45.asp aren't subject to the 1MB capacity limit.
We also discovered that we could see not only our own website files, but also every other file on the school web servers.

Three months into our adventure, accident occurred.
When we were extracting a ZIP archive as usual, we neglected to enter the destination path.
Consequently, the school frontpage was overwritten by our Default.asp file.

When we realized the mistake, it was too late.
We frantically searched the servers for a backup file, but couldn't file one.
We hastily put up a redirect from the school's internal website (that was overwritten) to the school's external website (that was intact), and deleted all our files.

A week later, we were caught by the IT staff, because the computer lab IP address was the only one executing "suspicious" ASP scripts at the time, and our name is on the computer lab registration book for the specific seat.
We were banned from the school computers for the rest of the semester.

After this incident, the school shuttered the personal webpage service altogether.
IT staff had to remake the internal frontpage from scratch as they had no backups anywhere.

The school had two web servers, both running Windows Server 2000 with IIS.
The personal webpages are meant to be accessible through both the internal web server and the external web server.
According to what we discovered previously, the files are stored in the internal web server, and mounted onto the external web server via Windows file share.
Since ASP needs to write to filesystem for database operations, the file share was configured with Administrator privilege.
Hence, if we access Dm45.asp via the external web server, it would have full privileges on the internal server and could modify everything there.

I'm just gonna say, it's a lot, more than I care to air out online, but I'm technically not homeless and I'm now able to pay some bills I was short on because I managed to win as well. So I'm sure someone else can use it far more. I'm just here for the cause. Pay it forward!

    Thanks again @Verasel

So it’s like c99 shell but for ASP? Anyway, given that you touched a lot of files, it is indeed a touching story.

  • Wish I could participate here, as I was inspired by Verasel's story. I have been in a stump for the past few years, no matter what I do, nothing works for long. That's why, I am a person who has had to face hardship, but, the second part of the requirement of the thread, i.e., a comeback, that's what I don't have right now.
But, I have come to believe through all this hardship that, the only thing guaranteed in human life is 'impermanence.' And, I am trying to be as optimistic by trying to make myself that this stump is impermanent as well, cause, I want to believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel, or, that the night gets darkest right before dawn.
I experienced my "Rock meet bottom" moment a few years ago, but, no matter how much I try to climb my way up, since digging isn't an option anymore, I keep getting pulled down. Took me some time, but, I did realise that the villain in my story is .... (drumroll please) .... me, myself.
And, the fact that I am trying to persevere through all this without giving up hope completely, kinda gives me hope, that greener pastures await me. The LET community has helped a lot, both inadvertently and otherwise, in helping ease the pain I am facing IRL. A huge thanks for that goes to Dustin (RackNerd). And, ofcourse, Verasel's story is an inspiration. It gave me a quick boost, helping me believe that, bad times are impermanent.
Thanks to Dazzle for conducting this giveaway. I just hope I qualify (with the comeback part) next time we all meet in a similar thread. Good luck to everyone.

  • I was born in the 90s into a family that wasn’t very well-off. When I first started elementary school, I wasn’t particularly bright, and my grades were consistently poor. Later, I noticed that many kids were receiving awards, and I asked myself why I didn’t have any. From that moment on, my grades started improving in the second grade, and I kept doing well until I got into high school and eventually university.

In 2010, when I went to college, I traveled alone. It was my first time going far from home, my first time studying in another state, and my first time taking a long-distance train. My parents were busy with work and couldn’t accompany me, even though my mom was really worried about me.

During college, I taught myself computer science, and after graduation, I started working in software development. Fortunately, finding a job was relatively easy back then, and the salary was decent. Things getting better now. New house and a lovely wife. But now, with the rise of AI, I’ve started to feel anxious about the future of software development.

I used to think that an always-on computer aka server should cost a lot so I didn't have any such servers. Well, "dedicated servers" actually cost a lot but I was not aware of the concept of low-end. Then I found LET. Thank you all.
