TGIF, it was resolved, my use of proton services (mail, vpn, drive) are working.

  • Wait, did you guys use proton?

  • I noticed Proton forces the same password for mail and VPN. A workaround is to skip the official VPN app and instead download a config file. Some VPN features get omitted in the process. Has anyone tried this? How important are those features that are only available in the official app?

There is 2 password mode. https://proton.me/support/switch-two-password-mode

  • Thanks. I was aware. If one of two passwords is shared with VPN, it doesn't really solve the problem. It's been discussed elsewhere on the web. Apparently Proton explained that they refuse to allow unique VPN passwords because of the business risk of password sharing.
I'm trying to figure out if Proton Unlimited is sufficient, or if I need to pay for an additional VPN when using an untrusted device.

I personally have always preferred using the config files instead of the official app. Hadn't thought of the fact that app using the same password as mail is somewhat of a risk.

  • It's interesting that you didn't choose the official app anyway. Do you like how it works without? Maybe Proton is good enough with config files only.
