China-optimized providers?

sanvitsanvit Member

Hello fellow LET members!

I am looking for a china-optimized provider for the following use cases. Any recommendations/reviews/etc. would be highly appreciated!

  1. Website hosting (preferably Hong Kong region - client will be on Shenzhen)

  2. Personal VPN for travel (preferably Japan/Korea/Hong Kong region - travelling to Qingdao)

Both will be only used for 1 month, using around 300GB-ish traffic.

For 1, pricing doesn't really matter that much as long as the connectivity is good (~$100/mo)
For 2, pricing does matter - willing to pay ~$30/mo

My research brought me to Misaka, xTom (V.PS), DMIT, BandWagonHost, and GigsGigsCloud. If anyone has good/bad reviews for those providers, as well as any other providers that offer similar services it would be highly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Cheapest? justhost.ru but kinda questionable, was working fine for my chinese gaming though.
Misaka buys at least partially from DMIT, they are both solid, not cheap though.

Oh didn't know Misaka buys connectivity through DMIT. TBH budget isn't really a problem for the website (paid by work - I'm pretty sure they'll be OK for up to like $400 if it has exceptional connectivity)

I'm really leaning to DMIT now. Thank you :)

    便宜的话用Claw Cloud ,不过这是个新公司。想稳定就搬瓦工香港,不过搬瓦工价格贵

Anything with a GIA or CN2 link is fine, but wouldn't it be easier to buy one from a random VPN vendor if you're in it for the short term?

  • Misaka has a very nice China optimized mix. They'd be my recommendation.

  • I used the services from spiketelecom.com/services/vps/ and had a great experience. I was in Beijing last month and it worked perfectly. You only need the 1GB-1CPU package, as the IP might get blocked by the GFW after a few days. I recommend setting up Outline VPN instead of WireGuard; in my personal experience, it seems to take longer to get blocked.

Thanks for the recommendation! Indeed I checked their Test IP, and it seems to be pretty good!
BTW, did Outline work for you? I've seen mixed results online, so was leaning to either XRay+REALITY or AmneziaWG.

Thank you for the recommendation! However, it seems like they only offer LA for their CN2 lineup. However their pricing is indeed pretty good :)

Pardon me? I've seen them responding multiple times to questions re Alibaba, albeit not spilling all details (which company does that?). Just yesterday (IIRC) they called Alibaba a vital partner whose infrastructure they rely on or something to that effect. And they are, if I'm not mistaken, a Singapore company, not one in China.

And I don't care at all. After all, if one wants to have good China connectivity one quite likely is well advised to have a strong local partner there, especially in a major country with its own system and regulations.

I'd also not (yet) go production with them but for entirely different reasons, namely because they still are quite new and the whole machine very likely is not yet "well oiled and tuned" and also because they still aren't well established and known yet.

But for playing, uhm testing and private use they look very attractive and I see "somehow connected to Alibaba" not as a minus, not at all, quite the contrary, I consider being connected to a very major and strong corporation with tons of experience in China as big fat PLUS.
The one major disadvantage I see is their normal pricing, but their promos are quite attractive IMO.

  • @jsg said: I see "somehow connected to Alibaba" not as a minus

    I agree with this statement.

Alibaba have vast peering relationships with ISPs within APAC (even those $$$$ eyeballs), and with this price point, it's quite affordable.

i asked them (and they answered) that alibaba is indeed their partner for the services.

Honestly we added that back in the day as a lot of users from China were expecting guaranteed optimised connectivity to China at all times of the day - which just isn't feasible based on the cost. If you're happy with the LG results that's what you'll get - of course just bearing in mind that during peak periods performance can change a little.

I’m sorry if I wasn’t clear about it. What I was trying to imply was not that having a connection with Alibaba (or any Chinese company for that matter - especially when looking for Chinese connectivity), but rather not being clear about their connection with them when they seem to be directly selling their cloud instances.

I understand that a company may not be able to share the details of their contract, but I was worried that this kind of pricing and performance may not be possible without some kind of fishy connection (not implying that they are - but I’ve seen providers reselling AWS instances with their Activate credits)

What I was talking is if they could disclose some kind of connection (e.g. they are just a reseller of Alibaba, or just using them as a upstream blend, etc.), I would be a bit more certain on using them for something a bit more enterprise.

We basically operate multiple networks, to simplify its a "Economy" route and a more "Premium" route with access to more guaranteed / hence pricier bandwidth. The NAT LG is particularly because it uses HKT exclusively, vs the other ones have access to HGC, Telstra etc.

VMs and Dedicated Servers both use the same network however clients can choose which one they prefer for their needs, or we can create something more custom e.g. You may prefer all traffic to go through HKT, and we could make that happen based on what you're looking to purchase.

  • I found it easy to use Outline VPN with just a few simple setup steps. If you're having trouble choosing a provider, you can replace it with AWS Lightsail Tokyo. Its quality was quite reliable during my time in Beijing.

Hmmm does Outline still work on China? I believe I've seen mixed results (although I haven't looked up for recent reports). I'll try AWS though. I've seen bad reviews in the past, but it seems like latency isn't that bad now :)
