Lets say you are running a VM on which the provider doesn't offer nested virt like Hetzner for instance.

If you are using only LXC/LXD on Proxmox does it matter if virtualization flags are enabled?

Will their absence impact on performance?

  • I've run LXC on debian (without proxmox) on vps's without virt flags enabled, so that part should work - it's all the same kernel so that makes sense ... what I can't speak to is whether proxmox will complain and to what extent...

  • lxc/lxd is a container engine. which is very similar to docker.
    It does not use virtulazation.

  • No impact, virt is not needed and Proxmox won't complain besides a small warning in the installer as long as you dont try to make a vm (which won't work).

  • No. They are containers so they don't need vmx or svm instructions
