Which is sad. It's many years since I used IRC last time but I liked to sit around in couple Freenode channels, mostly linux focused, some hobby, some games one too. The smaller communities were always nice, it went bad when any channel reached over 1000 users or so.
Yeah, we used to have a private IRC channel.for about 8 friends. Every now and then the owner would open it up to the public and within days it'd turn into a disaster, and we'd end up shutting down the server. It's been about 5 years since the last experiment, which is sad as we had a lot of good times on IRC.

Why was it a disaster? What happened?
Randoms joined and started acting like dicks. Not every single time, over about 5 attempts at being welcoming to outsides, we maybe had 2 or 3 people who just wanted to hang out and chat, but overwhelmingly people who joined just wanted someone new to annoy.
