Take a break bro. I remember you haven't slept last night because of personal thing.

Likely why I am easily overstimmed, on duty tonight too.

Tonight too? how do you manage?

Like I do...... Who needs sleep anyways....

Don't want to talk about it, but he have health issues, and immune deseases get worse without sleep. Thats why I'm worried.

Next year maybe, we will have a Strix in the pool.

If business is good, maybe I'll upgrade and offer up my used one next year in some kinda of raffle. Would be easier to get a used model through customs I imagine!

What if I shipped it all torn apart, and the winner had to assemble it? :p

Tearing apart laptop? worst nightmare. :'(

It's actually fairly easy to reassemble in most cases, unless you don't desolder anything.

As long as there is no soldering, that would make it way easier

I'll never buy something with soldered ram

yeah i do my best to avoid those now. No reason for them to do it

And just look at all these Linksys WRT series routers!

Probably acquired them when someone ran outta business.

They've been around for a while and love to collect like me, so we get along quite well.

Ahh, are these on sale BTW, the routers, esp?

They're mostly for display in the shop, but maybe if I asked really nice.

Here's my setup for the big RackNerd thread of 2021 :D

Woah, that's impressive, man. That green lit keybaord an HP Pavillion gaming?

    Yeah that's my 2019 HP 15Z, Ryzen 5 1050ti. Not a bad little rig for $450!

"Not a bad" is an understatement. That laptop had great thermal management (both hardware and software) for the price it retailed for.

Oddly enough the reviews from Best Buy said the exact opposite, but I snagged it anyway and mine is excellent still to this day. Probably fixed the cooling issue with a BIOS update by the time I purchased it, I guess the fans weren't kicking in when they should have been?

I was able to play Cyberpunk 2077 on it with no problems when it released, when people with much higher end hardware were complaining of constant problems, so I was happy with my choice.

I see, maybe you got one of the very first generations. Pavillion series you own was later famous among gamers for badass thermal management.

My first laptop was compaq. 2GB ram, pentium. 5kg weight.

    Whatever happened to Compaq?!

    Absorbed by HP.

Yup. That was solid laptop though. Service was also good at that time.

I have an old Compaq sitting in my mom's garage somewhere, probably only a handful of years newer than that IBM Thinkpad. I should go get it and see if she will still boot.

I think it will. Mine still turns on. Screen damaged but can see some gibberish on it.

screen replacements are probably one of the tougher repairs on laptops. had to do it once not fun

Don't want to spend anything on the ancient things. Just stored it as a collectible.

that makes sense. Maybe you can find one in working order for free eventually and bring it back to live then

yeah pc by far! I wish there was some sort of portaable laptop pc combo. Something that lets you double resources or something when you dock in but then you could pop out a small part of it and carry it on the go. i feel like dell had something like this at one point

I am bad at hardware soldered hardware.

Me as well. I try to stay away as much as possible, but recently I have taken an interest to it

    You soldered anything recently?

Yup, a router and my Android box.

Router? what did you solder in that?

UART. It helps you get shell access to any device that supports it.

what is UART? So many acrynmoms now! You guys know too much!

I forget what it stands for but it's like old serial connection. If you're unsure what that's like, think a shell/console connection.

got it. so like an old console/device you could plug in to get to the shell/console

TrK is so hyped now, he won't be leaving the first spot for anyone

Anyone hoping for the laptop needs to grab it from him, but, he's extremely competitive and that's understandable.

    I'm here.

    Go for it then..

Let's go go for it don't give up

Anybody who gave up- too soon. Take xpress' example. Learn from him.

Am i that much behind? :o

No, pardon me if I gave that impression. I was just talking about your spirit. Nothing can stop you from reaching that laptop, despite your busy schedule.

He's a professional at this, so he knows slow and steady wins the race.

I am like retired professional competing with young guys.. ๐Ÿคฃ

    Definitely not. ๐Ÿคฃ

Maybe some CSK music will get you there.

Not a fan of IPL though. Basically stopped watching cricket after retirement of Dada. Fan of him since school.

What is IPL and Dada? You guys are losing me, out of my knowledge

Well you'll understand these, if you know Criket game. I think not famous in the US though.

cricket never really made it to the us. One day it will i think. Everything slowly spreads over time!

I know it's not physical tech, but I once built a fully functional clock in Minecraft.

    How did you do that?

    Complex Engineering

Well, have never played Minecraft before. But, the functioning of the clock, did you code it in Java?

Oh, friend, no this is built with items in the vanilla/unmodded version of the game. With redstone you can make some crazy circuits, most people shy away from it though.

I haven't yet played Minecraft, but, doesn't seem easy to make a functional clock. Kudos.

Thank you! It was quite the undertaking, but I had a lot of fun doing it. If I still have the save file I'll get a screen recording from my Xbox.

Sure, do share it if you have it.

Just because you're interested, I'll fire up Minecraft right now and check. It probably doesn't work due to updates they have made in all of these years, but the structure should still be there. I just hope it wasn't lost in the transition to the newest version.

Oh you don't have to go through all the trouble if it's tough.

in case you missed it, he deleivered! very cool

well apart from lack of sleep it's pretty much good here as well... i hope you are with your family enjoying the day.

@TrK -- Plenty of time for sleep later, it's party time! That's the RackNerd way ๐Ÿ˜Ž Hehehe.

The kiddos are having the best time opening gifts this morning, their excitement makes it all worth it โค๏ธ These moments are precious.

Oh yes. These are the rare moments in life that technology just can't capture.

I like to have them captured all on video.. Hence TBs of data. I want to give them all the childhood memories when they grow up <3

    That's a good dada.

    Dada?

    Dad, father, the same thing.

    thats what i thought!

Hells yeah. What router /device is that? I UARTed mine to install OpenWrt on it.

I just bought an openWrt router, seemed like an easy route but not as fun

I do a lot of router mods, let me know if you ever need assistance.

As long as there is no soldering, that would make it way easier

I'll never buy something with soldered ram

    MacBook? Mac mini? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Nope. Thats why I prefer a PC. Most developers I've seen like the MacBook pro though. I do like the looks of it. But non upgradability is meh for me.

It's upgradable if you get the right tools, right replacement chips and a sure fire way to temper with OS core....

I think someone who has to work to earn, and spending on MacBook to work, will not have that much time to put that effort. :p

That's why we see more macs in garbage dump.....

Thats how Apple earns money.. selling new, dumping old.

and people keep flcoking back to buy more! The hardware isnt bad. its just how its used

    You guys are going fast

Too much caffeine for everyone

i think thats what keeps the fingers so nimble for most everyone else

Tea does that to mee. Stilmulates my brain and body.

Nicotine and caffeine both are addictive by nature ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜…

Nicotine I don't want to addict though

    Irony you already are ......

    Talking about trace levels?

I mean tea is addictive .........

True, but mostly because of the caffinee in it though. You could find non additive teas

A lil bit of debugging left. On it right now.

Just checked, the expected price for GTA 6 in India is around Rs. 6000!! That's a hell lot. But, I guess, the game justifies it.

What 6k? No i will definitely not spend that much on games.

Me as well. Coming from a generation of kids that used to have fun with Champak Jogo Discs, 5k for a game is unimaginable for me.

I have a big collection of PC games from EPIC games though. Btw, sale is running there. And free mystery game daily in this holidays.

Oh yah, they do that from time to time.

Thats weekly. But this holiday season it will be daily , and they've give some great games.
They even gave away GTA V once... I missed it though.

Yah, I remember. My cousin still has it from one of their GAs.

Seems I'm the only one who missed it. :(

Me as well. I don't have it.

Are you collecting this years? Today's one is Control.. grab it if you haven't. Its a great game.

Control keeps appearing in GAs every now and then. Already got it.

maybe it'll come up again in that case. Not sure how i managed to miss it everyt ime

Me too. Never been a fan of cricket my whole life (Yes, I was an anomaly among friends). But, still watched it for Sachin, Ganguly (Dada), Sehwag, Dravid, etc. and the gang. Since their retirement, I believe it has degraded.

I need to start watching cricket one day. It seems very popular. I jsut dont understand the rules and need to take the time to learn

Its very easy actually. You dont need to follow those rueles to play. Even with 2 people we can play..

thats pretty nice if you really only need 2 . Its sometimes very hard to gather a crowd to play
