Would you use other instruction sets for VPS?

I dont see enough ARM chips in the hypervisor world most of it is x86, I assume its because a lot of people are compiling their apps on their desktop and porting it to their VM. Yet with the rise of ARM end user devices like snapdragon and apple Laptop/Desktop CPUs should we be getting ARM VPS more often as it is more convenient?

  • Oracle allowed me to experience the ARM architecture VPS for free. I used it for about two years and found that it is not very different from the x86 architecture VPS. I am very grateful to Oracle for giving me an opportunity to experience ARM VPS.

  • I would try one for the fun of it if a provider offered a Risc V based VPS :D

There's tons of arm servers in use by Google, Amazon and Oracle. Companies that big run all their apps from internal repositories and can deal with arm compatibility issues.

For desktops, it's about as much hassle as using software if you've used rpi's before.

At my real work we migrated all our workloads to ARM a while ago because it provides clear cost benefits and is better for the environment as it is more energy efficient. We have tons of stuff running on AWS. Big multinational corporation.

Compatibility issues are minimal or non-existing because all major distros and every significant software is available for arm64. Byte ordering, word size and alignment is the same as Intel so there are no data structure issues.

Also recently I migrated my personal web/mail/dns/etc. host on Hetzner to ARM. I am happy with their cheapest ARM offering's price and performance.

Also I am utilizing Oracle's generous ARM free tier.

I would be happy to see ARM becoming more available and popular in the low end segment. As a cheap ass I would be delighted to see some kind of rock bottom ARM VM. Preferably somewhere else than in the most common locations.

I do not know what is the hardware pricing situation if you don't buy in large quantities like the big players. Also depending on hosting arrangements you might not benefit from the energy efficiency if you are not charged for the power usage separately.

As much as I want to use ARM, @isil deleted my ARM and refused to refund.
