How much RAM do I need on a backup server?

I want to create a central server where my systems will be backed up to, about 20 devices each with about 10 backup sets.

My goal is to use something like borgwarehouse.com, which I know nothing of,or some other tool for managing a centralized backup repository.

Is there some way of knowing how much RAM a backup server needs based on the amount of data being uploaded?

What other backup management utilities exist like borgwarehouse?

  • I don't have any firsthand experience with borgbackup.
a quick search indicates that borg needs quite some RAM, if your backup size is big.
chatgpt says you need 1GB of RAM for each TB of unique data being backed up.
specially with deduplication enabled. not sure how accurate that is.

  • Rclone all the way.

  • The way my backups work (duplicati) i never had issues with 256mb on the destination server
On the source server i have 4gb and lots of cache/temp dir

Duplicati doesn't have a great track record as a reliable backup tool, so I'd recommend looking into other options.

    Hm
    Never had issues
And i have lots of versions and dozen or so backups
Sadly i never found anything half as good as duplicati :/

You don't need much ram to just run an application and plain storage that you're fetching. If you're going to have a lot of load on the storage, sure it might beneficial with RAM, but then again, it also depends on the amount of storage in total. If you're not going to use it to store actual files, but rather encrypted and deduped backups with borg, go with a minimal amount. But the only real answer is to test and ensure that it lives up to your performance requirements. :)

    EDIT:
Also, just because an amount is "recommended" doesn't mean it won't work with less. It's always about your use case.

  • May be a TrueNAS Scale Server?

Along with rsync or other setups like Nextcloud etc..

Well, per default zfs is quite demanding in terms of RAM, especially if you would turn on dedup. And by no means are any kind of raid (hw or sw) a way to backup.
