Providers double check your RIPE Sponsor lists!
Hi,
Don’t normally make posts like this but RIPE decided to get greedy earlier this year with the ASN resource fee in the 2025 Charging Scheme. Love it or hate it - it’s happening. And that’s not really my issue in this thread.
RIPE reached out to us today (as I expect they did with my other LIRs) as my LIR “sponsors a considerable amount of End Users”.
I thought - ah great, ripe giving me a heads up about my 5 figure renewal bill this year. Sweet!
Scaleblade has tried to be as transparent and courteous in terms of notifying our clients and making it easy for them to cancel their ASN if they don’t want it anymore. Turns out the same can’t be said for RIPE to us..
Browsing through this list I am seeing entries on our billable list that we have already terminated the EUAA for (after customer request) and reported to RIPE for removal, responsor or return to the ripe pool of available resources.
What I imagine has happened here is a lot of OLD ASNs are being cancelled and RIPE might not be as on top of it as they originally thought. Anyway, we keep our cases well documented and I’m British so I’ll fight it for the remainder of the year.
More of a psa for other RIPE sponsors on here. Check your list, don’t get shafted.
Be safe out there!

Good job spotting this.
Just had a look at our email and at a glance the numbers seem to be accurate for our account vs the billing ticket they sent out a few hours ago.
We even have an ASN that was returned few hours before the RIPE email was sent to us correctly not show up on our list.
Additionally we have multiple replies on tickets from different NCC members stating the billable items are all calculated on 31st Dec 2024, which is what I assume/hope/expect will happen
I am glad that you're now forced by officials to pay a fee to keep your ASN alive-- there are plenty of ASNs unused for years, or even registered by using fake documents, as someone used to do to gain popularity with his Internet eXchange.
Disappointment-- is the price (50 eur).. now LIRs it have to make profit also and you'll end by paying +50% of the price itself.
Kind of off topic for OPs PSA but…
True. That being said, in today’s world of 4byte ASNs, there is truly no shortage of numbers to be allocated. This is compatible with the amount of allocate-able ipv6 address space. Additionally an internal/un-announced asn has no impact on anyone but the couple of bytes in the RIR database or any RIR specific maintenance policies (automated yearly abuse email verification or the likes)
I am not entirely sure if a ~50EUR yearly fee is going to stop any bad actor from attempting to follow through with their plans of using fake or incorrect documents for registering their asn sadly
The annual fees on ASN's are not going to improve anything you listed here. It will clear out unused ASN's correct, but it certainly won't reduce abusive applications. The reduction in dead ASN's will be negligible in terms of the resources it may save.
_ (hot-take/personal opinion here)
This change had one objective and that was to squeeze an additional 2+ million EURO from LIR's (and their customers) per year because of mishandled spending habits within RIPE. _
