Build a 1u server
Hi, is there any good app/ site that can allow one to build a 1u server with basic components like motherboard, psu, memory, gpu, etc?
I am ok with pre owned stuff. Or any marketplace apart from ebay for finding these? Wanna build something for hobby learning.
Maybe a basement host is coming in winter? Who knows

Do you mean like a pcpartpicker type site for servers? I don't think so if so. I just go to eBay for used parts, really no other good option with such a big selection... plus at least eBay has protection in place for faulty hardware even if the seller lists them as "no returns". I've bought lots of CPUs off eBay, mostly from people upgrading.
Honestly, I'd kill for a ServerPartPicker, but it'd be arguably way too complicated to be done.
I'll send ya a message or send me one on discord.
I once bought a server here. You choose the chassis and then they offer various compatible components so you can configure it to your liking: https://www.bargainhardware.co.uk
Shipping to the EU was pretty smooth and the price seemed OK, but not sure what it'd be like outside of Europe.
I can't remember the website name but there is something like this already: the website allows to specify the compatibility requirements for the part you need (i.e. CPU socket type) and returns affiliate links to eBay listings, sorted by price. The hard part wouldn't be making the website per se, but promoting it so that the developer won't end up being the only user.

Happy to help you spec-out/build a nice system, if you are interesed in colo with us.
Just dm me here, text me on discord, or get in touch by ticket.
they sell used chassis and you build them up as needed. select a manufacturer and then 1u

Only giving a warning here since we used to use them in 2021 (mainly MET, their parent or sister company) for a lot of stuff but in June of 2023 they basically fell apart on us. It might be fine now, but after a few good orders we had (awhile ago, memory might be fuzzy) an order get stuck in waiting to ship for about a month. Very unusual, it was normally 2-3 day turnarounds. I asked what was going on, they were responsive at first. Then after another week I was told it can't be done now and we'd get a refund. I think after approximately a month and being told numerous times it would be "processed the next day" / "should have been processed already" I eventually just had to use PayPal to make a claim as I was worried about losing the ability to contest and get a refund if I had to go all the way to the bank. It was decided for us/approved and I did get the full amount back.
After that, I had made some blind bulk parts purchases this year on eBay and one was via TSS/TheServerStore who then came back and cancelled the entire order citing "supply count error" only to see the item re-listed again at a higher price a day later. If they didn't want to sell at that price, they could have at least told me that. Personally: I'd completely avoid them across the board at this point.
Highly recommend Luke @ Rhino, though if you're going for 1-off and know exact parts you want and all the little gotcha's on compatibility it's hard to beat the niche listings on eBay.
A huge portion of my job that I really enjoy is theory-crafting potential builds, and then seeking out how (and if) you can make it happen for less than buying an existing pre-made solution. It's a lot of fun, and with how many specialty requirements exist in the server/enterprise space you can rabbit hole pretty deep. It has led to a few of our core (and most popular) systems being completely unique as I had requirements for X, Y, and Z that no barebones or existing solution offered. I think you should post what you're looking for here or join a hardware chat to bounce the ideas around.
Do it.
Thanks for the update. It has been several years since I purchased from them. I had a bad rail and they replaced mine quickly. other than that no issues.
In fact if the OP is interested in a X9 supermicro 1u, or X8 supermicro 2U , I got em and dont even have them powered on now. Not sure what the rules are on posting that so mod can delete if necessary.
Yeah, we had a bad node in a microcloud and they fixed it but that was all prior to the issues in 2023+. I think we had another order that went through and then ~1-2 weeks later inquiring about it was told it was missing half the CPU heatsinks and I could get some pittance off (not even covering replacement costs). They did refund that one after about a week, though.
