[Alert] Web Hosts the sell WordPress can't use WordPress name in Domain or on Site

WordPress Foundation which owns the "WordPress" trademark has updated the tradermark policy yesterday (Sept 25th) after the legal fight between WP Engine and WordPress/Automattic

https://wordpressfoundation.org/trademark-policy/

According to new tradermark policy business (who makes profit from selling Wordpress hosting, themes, plugins) can't use "WordPress" mark in either website/domain/product/services they sell.

All other WordPress-related businesses or projects can use the WordPress name and logo to refer to and explain their services, but they cannot use them as part of a product, project, service, domain name, or company name and they cannot use them in any way that suggests an affiliation with or endorsement by the WordPress Foundation or the WordPress open source project.

  • You can call "XYZ Theme" but not "WordPress XYZ Theme"
  • You can name "XYZ Consulting/Serives" but not "XYZ WordPress Consulting/Services"
  • You can name "XYZ Web Host" but not "XYZ WordPress Host"

You though use "WordPress" on a website just for refrencing your project/services/products related or based on WordPress.

Can you say "XYZ Theme for WordPress"?

This feels like the same reason why WSA was called "Windows Subsystem for Android" and not "Android Subsystem for Windows".

Yes. Or you say it’s “compatible with Wordpress”. It is also best to consult a “not so chicken shit” lawyer who will avoid any risk without proper knowledge.

Also you can contact Wordpress, Automattic via direct or social media and probably ask them.

  • Can I use WP instead of WordPress?

    Yup, for now.

Can I sell products unrelated to WordPress under a domain name that contains "wordpress"?
    For example, wordpressbananas.shop?

    At your own peril....

    So... WordPress's Downfall?

What a bunch of assholes! I already had that impression when I read their hit piece against the "engine" company.

IMO the simple fact is that WP Engine wouldn't even exist, let alone have grown, if Wordpress wasn't so shitty. At the end of the day WP from a technical perspective is just a bloated PHP script pile and resource gobbler.

Sure makes it a little tricky to navigate these restrictions.
