VPS Block Storage – Is mine good and how it compares?

Hi,

I do not have any previous experience with block storage, so do not know what is considered slow or fast.

I’m using a HDD based block storage attached to a VPS and below are the bench Disk Results. Can anyone tell me if these results are good?

Also interested in knowing how this compares to other block storage providers, like for example hetzner, netcup, buyvm. If anyone has block storage disk benchmarks, please post!

Thanks

fio Disk Speed Tests (Mixed R/W 50/50) (Partition /dev/vdb):

Block Size | 4k (IOPS) | 64k (IOPS)
------ | --- ---- | ---- ----
Read | 1.20 MB/s (300) | 14.63 MB/s (228)
Write | 1.23 MB/s (309) | 15.19 MB/s (237)
Total | 2.44 MB/s (609) | 29.83 MB/s (465)

Block Size | 512k (IOPS) | 1m (IOPS)
------ | --- ---- | ---- ----
Read | 31.34 MB/s (61) | 37.25 MB/s (36)
Write | 33.63 MB/s (65) | 40.19 MB/s (39)
Total | 64.98 MB/s (126) | 77.44 MB/s (75)

  • That's definitely not fantastic, I think performance for large file reads and writes should be around 100MB/s for an HDD storage block or similar storage VPS.

That's a fair benchmark, anything lower than that means there's some hogging and stealing from the neighbors here.

Of course, you should also consider your selling price, which seems tolerable if it's a good price.
