How much continuous CPU usage is OK on OpenVZ?

I know this is a very hot topic and people have varying opinions about it, but just curious to see what do most people think. Thanks.

How much continuous CPU usage is acceptable for an OpenVZ VPS with a shared core?

    1. None. There shouldn't be any continuous usage.

  • Whatever % your provider says OK.

  • We only penalize users who are seen using 100% or more over a course of 8 hours straight. We try not to disrupt anything before they've reached this quota, or if they've really gone and screwed the pooch (400% over 4 hours, disrupting other users or the host system.)

And yes, we do have OpenVZ; not just KVM now. (for those that might be confused.)

  • Depends on each hosts.

IMO if you need continued dedicated CPU use 24x7 above what the OS needs to run then you should not be buying a VPS you need dedicated resource you get a dedicated server.

Obviously peaks etc are fine, even for a few hours, but 24x7 is dedicated resource territory.

  • Most provider would be ok for upto 20-25% of cpu usages hopefully even constantly, I highly doubt above that!
