Resources Needed for this WordPress Website?

Hi
I have 5 WordPress websites to deliver courses using TutorLMS and some other plugins (but not too many). The videos are not going to be hosted on the server (I use Bunny.net to stream videos).
I have about 200 visitors/day per website. A visitor stays for about an hour or two a day browsing lessons and doing quizzes.
I'm not sure if I should go for Hetzner VPS with a shared CPU or a dedicated one:
Shared: 4 vCPUs + 8GB RAM = 6.8 Eur
Dedicated: 2 vCPUS + 8GB RAM = 12.5 Eur

I'm not sure if the dedicated option is an overkill for my use, but I also don't want the users to have a slow experience and want my website always to run smoothly.
If the dedicated option is more than enough, how many more websites of the same use case can I host on it?

One more, for those who use Hetzner, is it easy to upgrade servers when more resources are needed?
Thanks for the help.

  • Starting with the dedicated CPU option would be a safer bet for ensuring a smooth and reliable user experience. You can monitor the server's performance and, if resources permit, gradually add more sites. If the dedicated server handles the load well, you could scale up to 8 websites, but always keep an eye on performance metrics to avoid overloading the server.

One more, for those who use Hetzner, is it easy to upgrade servers when more resources are needed?

Rescaling takes a few minutes depending on the spec, the server has to be offline during that time so I suggest not doing it at peak traffic hours or set aside a maintenance period.

The main limiter on what you can scale to is your current disk size. When rescaling you can opt to keep disk size the same which will allow you to scale back down again. You can't scale to a plan with less disk size that you currently have.

  • Do you mean that 200 visitors took the quiz simultaneously? I think it's safer if you take dedicated, because the resources you get are clear. Some of my experiences when using shared, if our "neighbor" uses resources too intensely, usually the server will allocate our resources to cover the server load (but this case usually occurs because the provider is overselling).

Thanks. What is Hetzner's reputation regarding selling/overselling? Do you have any knowledge?

Dedicated core? Or dedicated thread on a shared core?

If threads, ideally you would be provided a dedicated core with two threads, but that may be out of your control.

I've never tried their VPS, so I don't know.

Why don't you look for a decent shared hosting with LiteSpeed? It would cost less than getting a VPS, and chances are, you will be getting cPanel, Imunify36, CloudLinux's hardened PHP and X-ray, among many others.

That sounds really bad. That doesn't mean good providers do not exists, though.

In any case, all the best in your search.

I have hosted one wordpress website with traffic - 100,000 pageviews per day.
    1 CPU - 1GB RAM - shared web hosting 🥲
Setting this is very easy if don't message with 10s of plugins.
Litespeed server - Quality web host - proper caching.

DM me if you need help with wordpress optimization.

If you need a VPS, Digital Ocean or Linode are excellent choices, offering near-zero downtime. Setting up Nginx with WordPress can be done in under two minutes 😃.

With Digital Ocean, taking regular backups and switching to a different location is very easy.

I don't thing it's old a Xeon Gold... literally it's lot of hosts what sell DDr3 VPSs for world press or woocomerce at triple prices and all work good. And for example at e5-2699 v4 we hosted kiwifarms what have 10-15k+ views per day , and all work good, so for a simple worldpress website i thing it's enough :)
