iDrive e2 increased their prices to 5$

A few days ago it was still 4$ per TB ... Now they are charging 5$ per TB for their Pay-As-You-Go. Makes them a lot less interesting then just going with backblaze.

Seem the new price has been put into place without any fanfare or even blog post in the last few days.

Frankly, i do not understand their business model offering 50% off in the first year for bulk space, and then doubling the price after. O, you can order multi year, well, 1 year 50%, 2 year 100%, 3th year 100% ... What a incentive to order multi year. Do people really fall for that?

  • I paid only $15 for the first year for one TB and the renewal is $30, which is still much cheaper than the others.

  • IDrive e2 at $5/TB is still great value for the service. It's been working great for me

    Careful with their "Additional segment fee of $0.008 per 10k segments"... Not a issue if you store a lot of big "iso" files. But if you run a business that involves a lot of small file or thumbs or images, that can rack up fast!

    This is easy... It is so you (or your company) will have invested time and resources getting the service working well with your systems that you won't leave when they double the price..

    I've read of people who have been bitten by the segments system and spent a lot more than expected.

    Maybe but it has the effect that i ( a potential customer ) see this same service as less reputable. Maybe they gain more margin on some customers that way, but they also lose out on customers. And then there is the whole customers that make new accounts, and transfer everything over. That is not exactly optimal for the netwerk / disks, as your introducing a ton of extra write/traffic.

    The thing is, they are using S3 API. So anybody who uses a server or services that use S3 API, means you can walk out the door very fast. This is why i do not understand that business ... Fact is, they are the only ones from all the big object storage providers with that system, that tells ya what the other think about it.
