Good question. I'd guess it's rather a combination of phreaking (the part where you'd mess around with telephone systems, which is pretty much forgotten these days) and hacking but then i wasn't around in 85 when they were founded

Yeah, things in general have gotten a lot slower (which is strange looking at how in general everything is basically moving at speed of light these days). It's kinda like people managed to tame their internet addictions
