What to do with older hardware?

randvegetarandvegeta Member, Host Rep

As time goes on, we've started accumulating a bunch of older hardware that is not really suitable for use in production. Hardware like Intel Core i3-3220T machines with DDR3 RAM.

The disks are mostly destined to be tossed out and crushed, or at best kept in storage as backups.

The chassis and PSU can be re-used, but it may be easier to just get rid of the entire machine.

Other than just tossing them all, what can one do with this older surplus hardware? Is there a market for it? Even for a few bucks?

Over 50. Specs vary but include i3, i5, i7, Xeon X3430s, Xeon L5520s, Xeon E3s and maybe a few older machines too.

I have an inventory database, but I dont have an easy way to export the data to a LET friendly format.

The problem is that these machines use about $10-15/month in electricity. Selling for $20-25 would literally just be breaking. So there would be no point. Besides, VMs are starting to outperform these older dedis so even if were technically profitable to sell them on a monthly basis, it would make more sense to virtualize them.

Depends on what the chassis are. I buy bulk Supermicro 512's.

In Hong Kong, nobody has a basement. And garages already cost millions.

  • Use as construction materials. With enough welding you can probably build a nice cozy house from server chassis.

If you can't store or sell in your area, then it's best to toss and crush them. But I would recommend keeping some of them for backups.

Ugh, mine are retired for many years already. That is ancient stuff and if you don't have dirt cheap power, useless.

It's been sitting in storage for years. Now I'm running out of storage, hence the need to get rid of them.

I would have taken a couple, but Hong Kong is too far indeed.

  • Directly on a local auction site like ebay, FB Market, and reduce the price to that of scrap metal ... Or donate to local associations, Fablab Club and get some local web traffic with a donation landing page ...

Old CPUs (depending on how old) are often very power hungry. Which comes with old technological process and missing many energy optimization systems that are present in recent hardware.
i3-3xxx is not that bad yet but still... if you are meant to run it 24/7/365, it can turn out getting some low cost recent atom/celeron/embedded cpu is much more fair deal for you.

Those doesn't seem that old.. haha

I have one PE 2950 left running I want to get rid of before the end of this year..

Boss has a Dell 1650 that just won't quit.. I want it to die so I can replace it with something a lot newer, thought about dropping it from above my head more than once, but it kicks along doing its job, so until it does, it stays..

For your stuff, donate it to an e-waste place that does referb for groups that need computers.

you can send those to Bangladesh, i will sell it here in a good price.

For us at least, hardware that is no longer economical to run, we remove from its chassis (and in case of Supermicro, repurpose the chassis ... ), and build into an ordinary ATX case and donate to local poverty charities / similar initiatives.

There's something magical to it when a kid is excited to thank you he can run Minecraft on a 24GB RAM beast :joy:

  • Put all of them in a container and ship them to me in Barbados I will use solar inverters to power them and my neighbor wifi and then offer low cost VPS to the world...

leaseweb still uses intel 3rd gen for their vps

Barbados VPS sounds like something I'd buy :p

Seems like just chucking it is the only real option here.

If people don't even want to pay for the shipping, it's well and truly worthless. Negative value even.

  • intlaz26intlaz26 Member

I would say sell the equipment or donate for some use.
