Hosting videos issue

So any video of any format hosted in any location, vps, cPanel, custom panel will freeze the browsing session / site for a few. It acts exactly like rate limiting. Just basic VPS install with a web server playing back the video just using html5 in the browser same issue.

VPS spec doesn't matter it still occurs. Its like the VPS or shared host rate limits just that current browser session making the entire site unusable, but during this time one can open a different browser or incognito and its fine while the other session still wont load the website.

Dustin from Racknerd 2 years ago even confirmed this issue and seen it himself.

Just upload a few videos into a folder click in and out of them a few times you'll see it yourself. more noticable on larger videos, but does also happen on 20mb videos for example. Not sure about other browsers, but this 100% happens in Chrome.

Is there something I'm missing? Any script I could use on a VPS to host the videos through?

I tested bunny.net which works just but perfer to not have to have something else I have to pay for.

Assuming you have the rights to use said videos you want to stream...

Then I'd be happy to spin up a demo and see if this also occurs on the sitetide cloud hosting services.

    :-)

Indeed I do, but for my use case SiteTide would be a bit over budget

Share nginx config and I'll point out your issue. For example it may be too big lookahead which causes the streaming process (and that HTTP session) to stall, while other HTTP sessions arent stalled and still work.

If not config then your videos arent encoded properly, for example MP4's need moov atom at beginning of the file, which you can do with faststart flag - you can fix this issue by copying audio and video stream, but adding flag with ffmpeg. No transcoding, few secs and fixed.

  • @HuntersPad Here is a mediacms demo I have, on a 2GB vm from Linode.
https://videos.theserveradmin.com/ I have encoding turned off, so these are just streaming the original mp4's

    Thanks, Anthony

Look nice, can you make mediacms private viewing only?
