Install Windows 10 on VPS

Hi all,

I would like to install Windows 10 on some VPS, but not sure what I would need in terms of specifications.

I bought ColoCrossing Bronze cloud metal server https://www.colocrossing.com/server/cloud-metal-servers and installed it from custom iso windows.iso with vitio included. (win iso is from Microsoft site and second drive was mounted with virtio dowanloaded from Fedora site I think)

Access is over RDP but somehow it is not working as expected. It is slow and I'm getting a feeling that those are not dedicated cores as advertised.

I used to use Worldstream's dedicated server with Intel 1245 that has Intel GPU integrated and it worked good, but I needed something in USA so went with CC Cloud Metal servers thinking it will work ok, but I'm disappointed. I it is not usable for surfing and light site updates works. Even problem with CC IP being blacklisted on some places.

The thing is I need to separate works per projects and keep them on separate machines. It might be better to spin up VM with windows machine and use some vpn instead rdp to VPS in usa. In that case need to invest in new HW

All thoughts and advices will be appreciated.

Thank you in advance

    That is my approach, one VM per project, where possible. Using containers will give you separation at virtually no cost so you would be able to run the same projects in the same hardware in sandboxes.
    You can use something like wireguard if you need an IP somewhere else and any VM would do, even some rarities like 256mb ones, for as long as they have a half-decent uplink.

    @neboysha
    When it comes to Windows OS, the cpu kind is extremely important.

    2 vCPU Ryzen 7950x
    4 GB RAM
    50 GB NVMe storage

    and Windows RDP would be running pretty smooth.

    I can recommend some vendors (not in any particular order)
    @oplink
    @crunchbits
    @rsk layer.ae
    @Clouvider
    @Shakib
    @heartbeat_IT
    @labze HostBrr
    @jordi (ryzen vps)
    @host_c
    @lnx Linveo

  • One more thing, @neboysha
    Avoid vendors like ColoCrossing

  • good luck!

    Hello,

    thanks for feedback. Basically after this I figured out that would be better to virtualize my machine and give VMs separate network access. Wireguard to only one small vps might be a bit inconvenient as I could use paid VPN instead for multiple devices (multiple VM inside my own node).

    I'm using VM Ware Player for local virtualization as find it works smooth with local docker and WAMP as well (Virtualbox somehow won't work with docker alongside).

    So the time is to upgrade my machine giving more powerful CPU and a lot of RAM and run multiple VMs under this node and with VPN involved when I need some machine to access to the internet from other country.

    Thanks again, I appreciate your feedback.

    Yes you are completely right about that. I used to have 1 core VPS with 2 GB of RAM from https://naranja.tech/ and was able to install win 10 form their panel, and it runs, not speedy but run, merely because they use powerful AMD CPUs .

    Thank for feedback and recommendations

    Live and learn, basically I'd be better to buy monthly and cancel any time but never mind will find some use for this one. But those are not 4 dedicated cores :)

    A full VM will eat a lot of extra resources. I would use some kind of a container, depending on your needs.

    Windows Server OS is better — far more stable and resource optimized and can run any windows 10 app
