It's not so much as to "only" having Amex as it's a lot of people use Amex for business stuff or prefer to use the Amex.

How many times can I use Amex in one sentence?

What reason might it be preferred?

  • You can use Amex on Paypal though so you can just connect your eBay to Paypal?

This is exactly how I've gotten around merchants who like to charge an extra fee for taking certain cards, but don't do so for PayPal. European airlines seems to be notorious for this.

They've got a pretty well known travel rewards program that gives business owners various perks when their employees rack up expenses on the card. That's a pretty standard deal now, but I think Amex's program was one of the earliest and most popular back in the 80s and 90s.

I only keep AMEX now because it's one of my oldest cards. Not the best option for business. Seems you can still pay through PayPal though with AMEX.

Does anyone know why such things happen? Where, I presume, in the States it is common to have a variety of cards from various vendors at hand, I find myself in the position to have multiple cards from multiple banks, but all of them are Mastercard. I wonder what would happen if they decide to put a ban on a card that has a - moreorless - oligopoly in a certain territory...

Which country are you in? Can't you get some Visa, Amex or other network cards?

    I am from The Netherlands.

Sure, the possibilities are there, but they are barely in use. In here, we are still for the better part dependent on Maestro cards for daily use. If "lucky", one receives a Mastercard, which is now gaining more popularity as Mastercard announced Maestro to be shut down. Visa is a possibility with some banks, but just the biggest ones, when you ask for it as far as I am aware. I am not aware of any bank issuing anything more 'exotic'.

This leaves me to wonder ... if such big corporations are this easy in denying a certain vendor, what impact it could possibly have ...

Going to be an interesting battle on that, I would assume Amex has more to lose than Ebay.

There again eBay did loose PayPal for a tad while and then they added it back.
So probably just a small blip in the radar.

I love using AmEx due to better security, but do not accept it due to notorious high merchant fees charged by AmEx

  • Guess the fee is too high for eBay to be profitable?

I personally use Chase Ink Business Preferred and Sapphire Reserve for personal. High rewards for hosting/computing transactions, and transfer them to Reserve for a 50% redemption bonus. As someone who is generally frugal... I basically never spend money out of pocket when I travel (hotel stays, I generally only drive). Nothing beats it imo.

Amex customer support is very good. You call them 4 am on Sunday and you are getting a knowledge american based support agent - not someone who works for 3 separate credit card customer supports in a foreign country who gets paid $2 an hour and doesn't know or give a shit to know about the actual policies or providing good support.

Well, for one my Amex Gold Business card has no preset spending limit. That means I can use it for very large purchases.

I like US Bank better - US cash + is insane. Chose any two categories on the free version or choose any 2 merchants on the paid for 5% cash back +2% cashback on gas/ restaurants/groceries

  • @DataIdeas-Josh said: This one looking pretty good.

The Citi Double Cash and U.S. BANK BUSINESS ALTITUDE™ POWER CARD (copied from their site) also offer 2% back on all purchases.

I sometimes have a beer with certain friends that unless you tell them to shut the hell up with your Amex propaganda they'll talk about free upgrades, centurion lounges, buy one get one annual first class tickets, concierge restaurant bookings and so on for hours as if they are a minor celebrity and not one of tens of millions with the same card and benefits. It's so boring, and a little embarrassing if anyone else is ear-wigging, especially when they come to pay and realized that's its cash only, for some reason their personally concierge won't run to the bar with cash? which i find odd but it's your personal concierge? you made it sound like your servant earlier?

I don't blame ebay tbf if it means lower fees for everyone else.

  • Use PayPal ApplePay GooglePay to mask AMEX
Use Curve to physically mask AMEX, if you go to a country/shop that does not support AMEX

Curve must be losing money if they support that. I can understand with Paypal as their fees can probably cover it, but if a merchant is only paying 1.5%++ on visa, there no way Curve can make up the rest as a recipient of only a portion of that?

Just checked. On the free tier, you indeed pay 1,5% more. With their paid subscription, the first 1500€ are free.

Cyrus, Amex those are ancient payment methods.

In Sweden, the Amex & SAS partnersship makes one of the best credit cards probably.

But there’s not much competition. Most suck.

Not true anymore, sadly. They've outsourced some support now.
