Oracle Cloud VM (free tier) unstable for anyone?
This is an ARM Oracle Cloud VM, free tier, in US East.
I had it running since 2022, but as of this week once a day or so it becomes unreachable and needs a reboot from the web console. Issuing ACPI signals for power off and reboot over the web console is inconsequential, the VM needs a hardware reset to resume working. It has plenty of free memory before and at the time of each crash, I don't suspect OOM. All 4 CPUs are busy all the time, maybe it gets suspended because of it? The web console merely reports that "the VM is unresponsive" and blames it on me for misconfiguration. No general service disruptions are reported for the region either.
Anyone with the same issue?

Stable as a rock. Running almost 2 years without any downtime. Europe region. Incredible gem.
Same here. no issues since past 1.5 years.
No issue for last 180 days, but got reboot half year ago due to some interal issue said Oracle
For those running the ARM instance, what is your output of
uname -r
?Mine is
6.5.0-1021-oracle
, and I installed it ... last week, when these problem began to appear. I may have found the culprit.1 year, solid
Mine is also 6.5.0-1021-oracle. No issues to report.
You mean Reboot from OCI console? If not try rebooting from OCI console. You may end up in a different physical node which could fix your issue.
Extremely stable here, more so than ‘prem’ LET providers
In fact other than bandwidth it’s actually quite well priced beyond free tier
eu region, no problems with my 2 vm's. very stable (running Debian)
West coast has been also extremely stable for almost two years now. It has been so good that it (almost) makes me want to pay for the service. Using Oracle Linux 8 on two instances.
Now I installed the kernel
6.5.0-1021-oracle-64k
, replacing6.5.0-1021-oracle
. I have no clue how the two differ, I'll check Oracle's documentation next time it crashes, if it crashes. The only other modification I made to the VM last week was to install
linux-tools-6.5.0-1021-oracle
, and before that I hadn'tsu
in months, so I think one of these two packages is responsible.Correction to what I said earlier, using OL9 with 5.15.0-105.125.6.2.2.el9uek.aarch64.
Yes I also had the same issue yesterday in Seoul, need to force reboot from console. It's Debian 6.1.0-18-amd64
No issues in Singapore, ARM and x86 are on the most recent kernel that they provide. It's actually been really impressive how stable they have been.
My arm64 is
5.15.0-1055-oracle
, a Ubuntu 20.04.6. Seems to run just fine in Tokyo.they never accept my cards
Mine too!
Try in a browser without any add ons! Any!
Very stable. I divide arm free tier to 2 VMs for hosting zabbix & cloudpanel.
I tried with at least 10 cards (debit/credit) and also copied and pasted the address properly, but it never worked. I'll try again without any add-ons
Oracle vps for free how many years?thus it need Cc?
It was same for me, but when I tried without any add on's it shows some different error
I tried with about rm600(+- $150) in balance in my debit card with overseas transaction enabled, and it is successfull....last month upgraded the account to paid account....
The instance crashed again today, I terminated it intending to recreate it with a new boot volume from a fresh OS image, and... now I can't recreate any VM shape at all! All availability zones for all shapes/architectures are "out of capacity" for me.
Larry, it was great until it lasted.
I wish there was a reinstall option. I want to do a fresh install of Ubuntu 24.04 but I am worried I ll lose my free instance
Not all cards work; you withdraw the account statement and put the address exactly as it appears in the statement. Some cards work... Mine worked, and suddenly I found it deleted without any message, warning, etc.
I stopped using oracle few months ago
they work fine for a while and then they suddenly start to lag or crash and idk many weird stuff .I shifted all my sites to paid VPS now so no more headache.
@davide
Maybe try using Ubuntu?
Upgrade to PAYG and you're fine!
Just stay bellow the limit for the free tier and you're god to go!
