Device that can do Data Cap/Limit

Hello, I need help.

I allowed my neighbor to use my internet and they pay too. Originally he wants to connect so his daughter can do research and stuff. So I allowed it and I thought that their consumption will be around 50 to 100Gb/month. I charge them around $15/month and the original speed is 20Mbps. Then I was shock that their consumption in 2 months was around 600Gb and I found out that they are watching netflix, youtube at 720p to 1020p which consumes lots of bandwidth and I found out too that the Dad was watching porns (He told me himself) phew.

I limit their connection from 20Mbps to 5Mbps and still their consumption is still around 300-500Gb. I paid around $60 for the internet connection. What scares me is my connection will be throttled by my ISP when I hit 1Tb before the month end. Our (home) consumption is around 700-800Gb.

What I'm looking for now is a way to limit their consumption into 300Gb and when they hit that limit they cannot connect to internet. This way I can tell them to minimized using internet since he told me it is for research only. I could increase the fee though but will he not get mad? I ask for $15 when he started so it would be unfair I think if I increase that? I feel sorry for the kid though if I cut their connection as mobile plans are very pricey here.

Please note that I told the guy that his payment is good for around 200Gb/mo and he was cool with that.

I don't have a way to automatically limit their usage so I am looking for a device that can do that. ISP can block internet if you depleted your 10Gb data allowance. How to do that.

    WLAN/WiFi or LAN?
AFAIK there are switches who can do that.
BTW, you could also limit the connection to 1 Mbit/s so that they can use max. 660 GB/month (and likely they won't be blasting the connection the whole time.)

Just curious , why you neighbor don't take it's self a internet conexion?

    • you can read his bw
    • you can set his port speed

what's missing is the control... a bash script on the desktop computer?

But be aware that dad won't be happy to watch PornHub Premium in 144p.

Sometimes/Often WLAN routers don't have an API, and a headless browser might be a bit overdoing it, especially as the interface could change in new versions.

they tried to apply but wired connection is not available due to the terrain. They tried broadband but their connection is not stable. Even myself tried the broadband and I did not like it. Lots of drops and the speed is only 5Mbps with a 2G premium bandwidth/daily if you used the 2Gb premium your speed drops to 0.5Mbps

I got some old range extender (150meter coverage) and they bought a tenda router which connect using WISP mode. I did limit their speed to 5Mbps but what I want is to stop their connection once they reach the 300Gb monthly qouta. I believe there are around 4 device in their home. I enabled the remote web login on their tenda router so I see around 4 to 5 device connected.

    curl does html forms.

I know that. But what is with login, maybe email verification, ...

You router login form asks for passport too?

You either need a smart router that can do traffic shaping or can build one yourself. Old thinclient + decent wifi card + Linux and you can traffic shape (or close down on traffic limit) to your hearts desire. I think a decent card should even allow you to run multiple APs, so you can give them their own, which is throttled like there's no tomorrow.

Maybe email verification is a bit very rare, but I believe that two-factor authentication is not that uncommon with routers.

it's kinda straight forward isn't it?

on a 5mbit connection you just need to check once every 5-10 days on the data transfered and unplug the extender/firewall it and call it a day

cheapest mikrotik router with queue should cover what you want.

Yeah, it's either this or building some McGyver Linux/BSD/whatever router, which basically does the same thing. I don't see any point in overthinking this.

Have them setup their own internet connection at your address (a second one) is the best solution. Yes, a second account.

Otherwise, for your stated goal, it is not difficult using RouterOS, you need to understand networking configurations to set RouterOS up though.

Best solution: go to their house, explain the situation that you only have 1TB bandwidth and they are using 70% of it 💀 . Tell them you also pay 60 for the whole contract.

They probably think you only pay 30 and have unlimited bandwidth that’s why they were using it recklessly xd.

They won’t be mad if you explaining everything.
They will be mad however if the internet stops suddenly without any notice, half into the month and they have no internet access for the second half. That would be scummy, if I was you neighbor I would think you are not a trustworthy person, selfish, and will have a bad impression of you.

If I was you I would simply tell them the truth: they have been using too much traffic so your connection got throttled before the month is over. They won’t be unreasonable and demand you to keep the 15 contract while 24/7 downloading torrents. While knowing you paid 60.
