Reddit blocks 70% of Mullvad VPN Servers

After getting sick of seeing this 403 screen when trying to access Reddit with almost every VPN server I used in the past few days I decided to investigate: How many of Mullvad's VPN servers does Reddit block?

$ curl https://api.mullvad.net/www/relays/wireguard | \
        jq -r '.[] | .socks_name + ":" + (.socks_port|tostring)' | \
        rush -j 10 'echo -n "{} "; curl --socks5 "{}" --head "https://old.reddit.com/" -w "%{http_code}" -o /dev/null -s --retry 5 --retry-max-time 15; echo'

Which gives us:

Is this just a block of the M247 ASN or are there other IPs which are blocked too?

  • i have this issue but only on chrome, it works on firefix without any IP changes

i have this issue but only on chrome, it works on firefix without any IP changes

Are you sure and are you using Mullvad? I'm using firefox and the issue happens regardless of browser/user-agent.

When I last checked, 31173 was blocked as well - also ln firefox.

There are 40 blocked 31173 servers in the list. Think you missed it?

Is this just a block of the M247 ASN or are there other IPs which are blocked too?

Oh yeah, I did miss it. I just skipped through the list.

They're blocking a lot of datacenter/vpn/proxy IPs for sure.

Cloudflare WARP is not blocked, so you can run it inside a docker container that exposes a SOCKS proxy, then use a browser plugin to split-tunnel into that container based on domain.

At that point I'd rather just not use Reddit.

But you probably will because unfortunately it's one of the few search-indexed places not filled with AI or SEO targeted garbage.

Use old.reddit.com ... They block IncogNET IPs too unless using old reddit.

yep mullvad, could also be because i was signed in on firefox

The script uses old.reddit.com. I just tested a few sample IPs and there seems to be no difference between old and regular for me.

Given how incredibly mainstream VPNs are, calling them "abusive" is just wrong.
Besides, I doubt they are achieving anything with these blocks. They don't even block all VPN IPs (there are databases and APIs that make detection of all commercial VPNs trivial) and people who "abuse" Reddit for a living will have no issues bypassing their blocks with residential proxies etc.

There is no other website its size that I'm aware of that blocks VPNs to this extent.

Reddit isn't blocking VPNs, they're blocking IP addresses that have been scraping their website without permission. Someone else has used the VPN to try to scrape Reddit.

That's why not all of the IPs are blocked. They could obviously block all VPNs because those addresses are incredibly dirty, but they don't.

Makes sense. Funnly enough somebody used a tor ip as well for scraping, the hidden service (ofc with another relay being the ip accessing the hidden service (in simple terms))

    Yeah and that's retarded.
Use captchas (and try to build ones that abusers can't pay neural networks or people in Asia to solve for under $1 per 1k (that's the actual rate for ready-to-go commercial REST API captcha solving)).

Or you can just login to Reddit? It says right on the block screen that all you need to do is to login to an account. They're basically preventing anonymous access to the site.

So can and do abusers? I don't want to register a Reddit account. For privacy reasons alone but also because the site is a cancer and the only reason it's valuable to me is that it's one of the few sources these days where you can be sure to find actual posts by real humans and not AI-generated SEO-optimized junk.
Googling with site:reddit.com is all I use it for and I have no intentions of becoming part of their community ruled by an array of retarded moderators, one more degenerate and toxic to online communities than the other.

I doubt they are trying to block anonymous access. It's an idiotic attempt at trying to prevent abuse like you said.

No, abusers can create an account but they won't be able to scrape because Reddit will just ban their account.

You're just being unreasonable. Reddit has done some really shitty things in the past, but this seems quite reasonable to protect their content from being scraped without permission. They're not preventing every scraper in existence, but this is a good first step that will filter out most of them. Even if you scraped on a residential IP, you would get blocked by this filter. It has nothing to do with using a VPN other than the fact that other people will have the same IP address.

You're basically telling them spend a few million dollars on developing their own captcha or spend a boatload of money with some third party captcha developer. Just so you can visit their site with a VPN and because you don't feel like creating an account.

This is not their problem, it's your problem.

There are third-party services available that are not as easy for abusers to have solved. But even so, getting a new, clean(!), IP for abuse is even easier than having a captcha solved.
Captcha solving services also make use of residential proxies, be it a neural network running on a server or a bunch of Asians in a call-center of sorts. Therefore:
cost of captcha solving = cost of clean IP + salary or computing power

But besides, Reddit is valued at 9 billion USD and has multiple developers on payroll. Captchas really aren't that complex and having their own implementation would be superior to ReCaptcha, Turnstile, hCaptcha and what not just by virtue of not being as widespread and having existing moldels/software built for.

There are pools of millions of clean residential IPs that you can buy and access via an API for pennies. I could literally invest $10 today and be up and running in an hour, able to scrape Reddit for years with their current level of protection.

They gain almost nothing at the cost of locking out millions of legitimate users who just happen to use a VPN (or happen to be in the same CGNAT as a residential IP used by a scraper).

I think the main problem is that it doesn't really work. All they mainly want to do is block privacy frontends and (semi-) reasonable hide their data for LLMs except for Gemini. It is their and his problem. It's nice that you don't have the problem, but there are different kinds of people.

You pretty much need a residential IP

    Thanked by 1fart
  • 99% of reddit data you can already torrent anyways - and its not like it cost a ton to use residential proxies to scrape text data lol so I dunno what they are trying to accomplish with this.

That worked until about a week ago. Our office IP is apparently blocked now (not on our network, it's a separate standard commercial shared office connection). For months old worked and I preferred it anyways because I'm stubborn and never got used to new-style layout. Now it's all blocked. I will just have to figure something else out for those few times some obscure tech issue crops up and some legend has a reddit post solving it from 2016 with 3 upvotes. Already had to start getting used to this when all the subs went private awhile back.

That explains why I only started noticing the blocking a couple days ago. Always had a redirect rule to old reddit because the new UI is awful.

The solution @shruub posted is good. None of these instances appear to be blocked: https://github.com/redlib-org/redlib-instances/blob/main/instances.md

My networks, I block based on activity, not if someone is using a VPN or not..

If your VPN is blocked it is because someone used the IP/VPN for abusive activities.

As for Reddit.. They permanently banned my account, I stopped caring.

  • Buy cheap VPS, install Shadowshocks, and route Reddit traffic through Shadowsocks.

What a brain-dead, low effort post. No, one is saying Reddit shouldn’t block bad actors. But they probably shouldn’t block large blocks of IP addresses used by common consumer vpn apps.

Let’s do a little thought experiment — do you think it would be a bad idea for Reddit to ban every single available IP?

    • If you don’t think this is a bad idea, then that’s exactly why criticizing Reddit for sweeping hostile actions like this has merit
    • if you think it’s a good idea, well, you must live a tough life and I have no idea where you find the time to argue about shit on the internet
