Looking for Backup Server (NL/DE)

UmairUmair Member

Hello,

I am using different storage VPSs from various providers but after sometime, the disk IO with them gets really bad. (To the point where doing large backups/restore takes too much time).

Few example, of storage VMs from 2 providers here (recommended ones here on LET)

Block Size | 4k (IOPS) | 64k (IOPS)
------ | --- ---- | ---- ----
Read | 227.00 KB/s (56) | 3.71 MB/s (58)
Write | 243.00 KB/s (60) | 3.97 MB/s (62)
Total | 470.00 KB/s (116) | 7.69 MB/s (120)

Block Size | 4k (IOPS) | 64k (IOPS)
------ | --- ---- | ---- ----
Read | 3.55 MB/s (887) | 25.77 MB/s (402)
Write | 3.58 MB/s (895) | 26.25 MB/s (410)
Total | 4.13 MB/s (1.7k) | 36.03 MB/s (812)

I am considering getting a dedicated server to run backups now. Hoping to get better disk IO than these. What kind of deal I can get for something like

CPU (any 4/6/8 Core CPU with HT)
32 GB RAM
2 x 512GB SSD (raid 1 for OS)
2 x 6/8/10 TB HDD (raid 1 ... would love to have hardware raid but software works too)
1 TB port
10-15TB Bandwidth

It will be purely used for backup, nothing else.

I need it to be in Amsterdam or Germany (closer to my actual servers).

Any good offers? Or suggestions ?

Why not get a Auction Dedicated Server from Hetzner?

    should check interserver or pulsedmedia

You'll be in for a surprise on the IOps of just a regular HDD for 4k/64k then.
ZFS / caching might help a little if done properly, but still technically spinning gear is very limited in terms of IO for small blocksizes. Best of luck and don't forget to post results ;-)

Yeah, you should go that route, safe and fast

    Hi,

any chance that at least one of those numbers come from us from our FRA1 location between 10 PM and 6 AM CET?

If yes, this will be solved in the next days, currently we are shifting tons of data there and will change structure afterwards to improve IO.

If not, then for this scale the Storage Servers ( Virtual Machines ):

    https://layer7.net/storage-server

are actually very suited. Or maybe also a Proxmox Backupserver Account:

    https://layer7.net/proxmox-backup

I can also provide a testaccount for these.

    Otherwise as physical server:

HP Server incl. HP iLO Remote Management
    1x E5-2670v2 CPU ( 10 Cores / 20 Threads )
2x 480 GB SSD or bigger
    2x 6 TB HDD 7200 RPM
    1x IPv4/IPv6
    10G Port @ 50 TB Traffic

    Price per month: 119,- EUR

    Or with

    2x 16 TB disks = 139,- EUR / month

    cpu: 2630L v3
    ram; 64 GB ecc memory
    root: 2x 256 gb root
    hdd: 2x 16 TB hdd
network: 1 gbit port (unlimited fair use) | ipv4/ipv6
    location: NL

    server hardware

    110€ + vat

To get better price / TB, we would recommend to add more disks :D

For example if you run raid5 (3x 16 TB) its 135€ + vat / month, and you get 32 TB useable space.

if youre interested, just fill out the form on the dedicated server section on our page.

I am looking at them. I remember last time I tried to order with them for a server, they took few weeks to get back to signup issue I was having.

I understand SATAs in RAID 1 would not be ideal for better IO but I still think it would not as horrible as I have experienced with the storage VPSs. At least it would be consistent.
May be it's just my bad experience so far, but it really sucks when you really need a backup and you have to wait forever for a server to do anything.

No, its not yours. I haven't been your customer yet.

Any info on what kind of shift is happening?? Moving to new server ? New DC ?

If your ""BW - IOPS per Disk"" section on the storage server page is close to reality, I would actually use them for few other backup setups.
Can you please share a test IP / Looking glass ? I could not see any info on Network.

Thanks for the offer. That is going to be overkill for my requirements. Too much cpu and Port/BW and obviously higher price.

Thanks for the offer but it's more price than I could get with current providers. (And I don't really need 3x16TB).

Trying to keep it open to get a better specs (like HW RAID or 10TB/12TB disks) or better price.

    But to give an idea,

I can get 2x960GB SSD + 2x8TB SATA for €79/m at Leasweb (with Hardware RAID1)
I can get 2x960GB SSD + 2x16TB SATA for €100/m at Leasweb (with Hardware RAID1)
I can get 2x240GB SSD + 2x8TB SATA for €48/m at Leasweb (with Software RAID1)

    I can get 2x480GB SSD + 2x8TB SATA for €51/m Hetzner (likely Software RAID1)

    Hi,

no other datacenter. We are changing for the endcustomer products we offer here and on our website from a CEPH cluster to regular storage servers. The problem is simply that the prices we ask for the storage are not really compatible with hardware demands of a CEPH cluster.

So we can either increase pricings or change how things work. We decided to change how things work to be able to provide the service for the same price.

And yes, what we write on our page is what you get. Its part of the contract if we write it on the page. And just like you will get 8 GB RAM or 2 CPU cores if you buy them, you will also get this IOPS/BW limitation. Otherwise you have all right to complain and ask for a refund/price reduction.

If and as it seems, since you are searching for lower specs and refer to 51 EUR hetzner offers, then we wont be able to provide something useful here for you.

Powerprices in germany are too high to go with too small configs. For small configs, mass providers like leaseweb/hetzner/... will be always better from the price perspective, as long as you dont want extra IPs or need a KVM console or similar.
For bigger configs, smaller and more individual providers like us will often make better prices.

I know solution that offer 400TB HDD dedicated server with 1tb ssd for boot.
but its only for backup i guess. it called ihostart

however i send this thread url to him(calin, owner of ihostart) and he answered he dont offer small dedicated server atm.

but i recommend to check his hosting if you can pay 500$ a month easily, its very good option i guess....

if you still looking for those storage servers, we finally launched our storage section:

    Example Configuration:

If you take the basic configuration:
    - without addons
    - with 8x 20TB
    - stage3 commitment

    its 185.00€/month for 160TB Storage, which makes it incredible 1.15€ / TB / month (+taxes, +setup fee)

without commit its 220€/month, more infos on the page/customer portal
