IP6 & Personal Use

Really newbie question. Apologies if it was covered. Tried doing a googles search but couldn't come up with anything.

(please point me to a tutorial or faq if that's easier and this has been covered)

I checked and can request an IP6 address from the Erin's dot net.

But. What to do with a static address? Can I assign my googles phone that same address? Or move it to my green cloud server? Or use it at my home isp?

I always assumed addresses were temporary and held hostage by my phone or internet company. But is this not true?

  • It's not that simple you should learn BGP.

  • Why Ubuntu. Won't Red Hat 6.0 support ip6?

They both have a 6 so should be compatible

  • Do you mean ARIN instead of ERIN?
If you want to just self-host a few things, there's no point in getting an ASN. Your green cloud VPS should already have IPv6.

yes that was a typo thank you

  • Are IPv6 addresses being handed out like candy, these days?

From what I've seen, you can get one fairly easily from RIPE, not so much from ARIN.

  • I think the requirements from Erin's dot Net is that it can be handed out but has to be used immediately.

    Yeah, like mega cheap.

Yeah except candy gives bad teeth and actually costs relatively much

IPv6 is on the FreeDOS development wishlist.

i think the answers are in order: No, Maybe, No.

Google and your home ISP control what IP address you get, full stop.

Green Cloud does too, but may allow you to use BGP, in which case you could use your allotment.

@JosephF said: Are IPv6 addresses being handed out like candy, these days?

Yes. Why shouldn't they be? Wasn't the idea that every human would have a /64? It's not like we're going to run out. Heck, could give every human thousands of /48s...I think I read that IANA is still on their first /3.

Ignoring stop signs is kinda my thing.

You can tunnel a bgp session from a bgp vps to your home over a vpn, that way you van have your own ips at home as well.

I see that the closed service https://route48.org/ is now redirecting to https://bgptunnel.com/ which also offers a free BGP Tunnel.

You can use it as a playground to announce your IP range. Once done, ‏using the right tools and with careful configurations, similar to what @kait said, it's actually practical that you'll end up with your phone proudly bearing your own ipv6 address.
