Use a decently fast desktop with a wired network connection. Make sure you're logged into the portal. Have your credit card or PayPal or whatever information ready. And of course, be quick!

Aside from being logged in (of course), just make sure you go through without changing any options. The OS can always be changed later.
Location is a tough one. If they offer the flash sale in multiple locations, you're better off keeping the default unless you are able to process all the locations super quick and make a snap decision that another location is better. But even then, you'll probably get knocked out by someone else who kept the default and continued with checkout.

Yea it's much worse today than it was last night. Even late last night was bad. I was able to get in on one of the earliest ones when not as many people were trying, as well as another midway through that I just got lucky on. It was screeching near the end, and already today.
