Aside from network-speed.xyz and yabs.sh, are there any other interesting scripts or tools you guys are aware of? Not necessarily for benchmarking, but just general information gathering or other uses.

    general linux?
    htop
    ncdu
idk, i dont have many fancy tools

I've used htop, but good to know about ncdu!

saved my ass... on RN server as well... stupid fucking tmp files

Plus containers, virtual environments, nix shell and similar tools makes it easy to experiment stuff without the risk of breaking the OS and reinstalling everytime.

Yea for sure. I'm looking forward to using a VPS. For my current needs, VMware Workworkstation + VM snapshots are what I use to revert changes quickly. And also great when I want to clone to a new VM from a particular snapshot (needs to be shut down first, for anyone looking to getting into this).

Sweet! I've seen screenshots of this elsewhere, but didn't look into the tool. Glances - another to add to the list. Thanks.

When signing up for shared cPanel hosting, I don't recall Los Angeles being an option.

Hi @Turbo_Pascal -- That is correct for now, we just recently restocked inventory in LA DC-02 just in time for Black Friday for our KVM VPS product line, though additional shared hosting inventory in LA is underway. We're aiming to have that replenished in a matter of weeks rather than months.

True, VMware works great and also for running unknown Windows binaries the first time to determine they are malicious or not. There is Sandboxie too for user mode isolation, but running a full fledge VM is the best IMO.

If I were to think of any suggestion at all, it might be to consider adding to the "knowledgebase" some very basic information about AutoSSL. The small amount of information available does not tell a newbie where to go -- or perhaps more importantly, what not to do -- to get SSL up and running.
I am nitpicking. The experience is great overall.

Hi @Turbo_Pascal -- Thank You for the suggestion. I've informed the team to write some more articles on the subject of AutoSSL for our knowledgebase once time allows :)

In terms of AutoSSL, as the name implies, it should pretty much be automatic. So long that your website is pointed to our server's nameservers already, cPanel will automatically take care of activating the SSL for you within a matter of a few hours. If not, just open a support ticket and we'll be happy to help. Our availability is truly 24x7 and our average ticket response time is under 10 minutes - so don't hesitate to reach out. We make it easy and always love interacting with our customers.

Yea I've tested Sandboxie (ironically within a VM), but it wasn't for me. Got used to the workflow of cloning a VM, disabling network, running executables, then deleting the VM as needed. There are also online tools that will do that you for. Or even just virustotal.com for a pretty comprehensive scan.

If you refer to online scanners hybrid-analysis, cuckoo sandbox and so on, they are great indeed. VirusTotal also works great for scans. VT has a specific limitation of max file sizes. I think it was 700 MB or so. Recently came across a malicious sample which inflated itself to a size of a GigaByte and VT wont allow to upload that. It was filled with null bytes just to take a space of a GB on disk and prevent anyone from scanning it. But yes just using a hex editor to strip out the null bytes will suffice for scanning purposes.

VMs and snapshots are the way

  • The current versions of Sandboxie supports snapshots although its not a VM but useful in cases.

Oh and yes I was referring to things like hybrid-analysis. I'm partial to app.any.run.

Yes, for sure. I can't recall if hybrid-analysis can do that. It's more like VirusTotal in that it's a one-way upload and scan, right? No ability to interact live?

  • Pettiness is the tendency to get bent out of shape over trivial matters. Whether these trivial things stress you out or straight-up anger you, it doesn’t make much difference. The bottom line is that petty people care too much about unimportant things and complain about every minor trivial inconvenience.
