Buying a IP range personally?

Hello,

I always wondered if its possible to buy a ip range and to fully manage it yourself and link them to hosting providers you choose?
it would be great to always have the same IP adress and being able to switch host without losing that.

  • Yes, its possible, but not for personal use. At least not IPv4. But I don't think many LEB providers would be happy to announce your block for free. Or you could get a cheap dedicated server and then tunnel the IP's out of it.

You can BUY them when you get an ASN, very pricey and complicated.

You can however rent IPs from "IP brokers".

All the providers you want to use for it will need to be able and nice enough to give you a BGP session.

  • how does that announcing/bgp session work?

the BGP router of the provider you'd get a VPS from would basically scream to the rest of the internet (BGP enabled routers that is): 8.8.8.8/24 IS RIGHT HERE ON AS15169 (with 8.8.8.8/24 being your IP range and AS15169 being your ASN)

EDIS ( @William ), FDC and some others do these, but usually for a fee.

@gbshouse and @Amfy probably know a few more providers that are willing to provide BGP sessions.

  • if you do not have any ip address now, you may start plan for it. Apply new set of ip range since now ipv4 still available. in future, when you plan to migrate, you can just move your ip address to another provider without change the ip address.

@Mark_R - it's possible to lease the the IP space but it's pretty expensive, some providers charge even ~100USD per month. We are going to launch anycast-as-a-service soon so it will be possible to get your own IP and connect it to your existing infrastructure. Probably it will be also possible to lease smaller subnets (for example /29) so you can announce it via us by your own.

will rage4 dns provide this service soon?
what kind of prices you'd be asking?

@Mark_R - both IPv4 and IPv6. The service will be ready by the end of January. Not sure about prices yet.
