HostHatch: Storage performance ? Any review ?

How are the write / read / io speeds?
Do they limit abuse to guarantee minimum performance?

Have any of you tried it?

They seem quite reliable. However, I find the monthly bandwidth a little low. This would force me to take a higher plan when I don't need as much disk space.
Can we expect any offers during Black Friday?

Usually they do have offers during BF. But, beware - you cannot expect "instant" support - Some items which are not a priority, it may take a decent time to get answered. For the most part, whenever I have requested support, i have received resolution within a couple hours.

    Good luck

Their NVMe VPSes are very consistent across different servers and different locations, but the storage servers vary a lot. It seems like some are better than others, and it varies by time of day too.

Here's a recent test from a 10GB storage VPS in Los Angeles:

fio Disk Speed Tests (Mixed R/W 50/50):
    ---------------------------------
    Block Size | 4k (IOPS) | 64k (IOPS)
      ------ | --- ---- | ---- ----

    Write | 8.33 MB/s (2.0k) | 104.92 MB/s (1.6k)
    Total | 16.63 MB/s (4.1k) | 209.30 MB/s (3.2k)
               | |
    Block Size | 512k (IOPS) | 1m (IOPS)
      ------ | --- ---- | ---- ----

    Write | 342.85 MB/s (669) | 323.96 MB/s (316)
    Total | 668.41 MB/s (1.3k) | 627.70 MB/s (612)

which are pretty good speeds for HDD. Here's a test I ran 2 weeks ago on the same server:

fio Disk Speed Tests (Mixed R/W 50/50):
    ---------------------------------
    Block Size | 4k (IOPS) | 64k (IOPS)
      ------ | --- ---- | ---- ----

    Write | 9.51 MB/s (2.3k) | 124.40 MB/s (1.9k)
    Total | 18.98 MB/s (4.7k) | 248.15 MB/s (3.8k)
               | |
    Block Size | 512k (IOPS) | 1m (IOPS)
      ------ | --- ---- | ---- ----
    Read | 259.87 MB/s (507) | 406.23 MB/s (396)
    Write | 273.68 MB/s (534) | 433.29 MB/s (423)
    Total | 533.55 MB/s (1.0k) | 839.53 MB/s (819)

    All good.

However, here's a test from the server that completely failed recently, around 4 months before it failed:

fio Disk Speed Tests (Mixed R/W 50/50):
    ---------------------------------
    Block Size | 4k (IOPS) | 64k (IOPS)
      ------ | --- ---- | ---- ----
    Read | 942.00 KB/s (235) | 10.03 MB/s (156)
    Write | 976.00 KB/s (244) | 10.51 MB/s (164)
    Total | 1.91 MB/s (479) | 20.55 MB/s (320)
               | |
    Block Size | 512k (IOPS) | 1m (IOPS)
      ------ | --- ---- | ---- ----
    Read | 10.13 MB/s (19) | 12.36 MB/s (12)
    Write | 11.20 MB/s (21) | 13.82 MB/s (13)
    Total | 21.34 MB/s (40) | 26.18 MB/s (25)

Even before then, I never saw above 100MB/s on that server. I mostly used it for overnight backups so the disk speed wasn't usually an issue, but migrating data off that server took forever (rsync would often drop below 1MB/s)

  • Thank you all for the benchmarks.
    These differences are impressive.
For some I've never seen such good results on storage servers.
But if I understand correctly there seems to be no guaranteed minimum storage performance. It's a bit of a lottery.
So I'll wait for an offer instead.... Or go for a dedicated server

You can ask them to transfer your VPS to a different server in case you have issues. They should be fine with that. In my case, since it's a 10TB VPS, it's harder to transfer.

Having said that, HostHatch's site describes the storage VPSes for "mass storage and backups". Similarly, previous Black Friday threads have said this:

[Storage plans] are meant to be used for mass storage, and not I/O intensive tasks.

which I think implies that there's no guaranteed minimum I/O performance.

In general, they're a pretty good host (probably my #2 favourite behind GreenCloudVPS) and they should be able to help with any issues you encounter if you ask them nicely.

  • I used them for 2 years but had to give up. Stuff was constantly changing, lots of downtime, had to "migrate" my container over (pretty sure my ip changed during this time also) or something as I remember -- it felt like my node was way over allocated and the whole experience really sucked.

It was a constant, never ending headache.

I switched to Servarica and it's way better - basically if nothing ever changes, you know you are with a good provider.

HostHatch has always made it very clear that the support on special offers is very limited and handled on a best effort basis, they literally say that it will take at least several days before tickets are answered. They could not have been clearer about this, and still they get shit for bad support.
I have a few servers with HH that was not a special offer but full price, and the few times I have had to open a ticket they have replied within hours, usually almost instant.

They had a short period with some issues with ipv6 but it seems to be resolved now, other than that they have been rock solid and the network performance is nothing short of awesome.

I believe they used to offer 2 different storage VPS HDD Raid 5 and SSD RAID 10. That's why everyone can't agree on its performance. They even have a full Raid5 failure and data lost. They did said that it will be phased out and RAID10 only from now.

I tried them out and decided that it's have too much computation for a storage node so I went with Servarica instead. Their CPU is old and slow but I only want storage space.

If you want fast access to data then go with HostHatch. Otherwise Servarica have unlimited at 100Mbps or 6-8TB at 1Gbps.

  • my hosthatch storage VPS has been decent for me. It's no speed demon, but it seems to handle my backups needs just fine.

I have 2 servarica storage VPSes, and they have both comparatively felt a bit slow (we're talking 5+ min to reboot VPS). I'm letting those 2 expire at the beginning of November as my needs have changed, otherwise I probably would have explored options with their customer support.

I don't think they've ever done storage on SSD. I guess you mean HDD with SSD caching.

Yeah. It was good for a while, then slowed down a lot over time. The new one is faster (as per my newer tests) so hopefully it stays that way.

What was happening during the shut down / boot up? Did you watch it via VNC? I've had servers that were slow to reboot but when I investigated it, it was one particular service that was taking a long time to shut down.

Servarica's setup is a bit different to others in that they have large SANs (storage area networks) that multiple servers use. The hard drives are rack-mounted in a device that's separate to the actual servers hosting the VPSes. Kinda similar to BuyVM's slices I guess. They've got a loooot of space in their data center too.

I think their setup results in slower speeds when dealing with small files (like when booting), but really good performance for larger files.

Dunno lately why do I feel slow when accessing the server, the network is unstable, I ping the STO server always get RTO

MTR is a better way to test loss. You'll find out where the failure is as it may not be at the end server.

  • I have 3 in different regions and been pretty happy with them. HostHatch as a provider has been rock solid - I stopped buying anywhere else.

Please ticket in and we'll take a look since this isn't normal at all (it is also possible your server was IO limited)

    I have done so. #395922

Well, in the end I needed it sooner than I'd expected, and the quality is obviously there.
If anyone would like to transfer their server because they're not using it. Then I'm interested in picking up an old deal.

at least 2TB storage and a european location are my only criteria.
