IP6 / IP4NAT - FreeVPS.org

Hey, hope everyone is doing well. Appreciate the community here - and always thankful for the assistance.

I received a free vps from the big swingin dicks at FreeVPS.org / @TheOnlyDK .

I was looking at installing some fedi software - like funkwhale to share some sweet and legal tunes.

Noticed a "network" section at the top. With a huge emphasis on IP4 redirect. I was hoping to get some help because I am not familiar with IP6 or how shared NAT's work.

With my DNS/Domain provider, assumed to just update AAAA record and hope for the best.

But should I not do this, and just use the Network tab via FreeVPS.ORG, add the domain through FreeVPS & a TXT entry (?)

Feel bad pestering anyone due to me not being a paying customer. I know everyone's time is valuable. So if there is a thread or guide somewhere, plz point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

You can do both. AAAA for v6, and you use this domain page for v4. From what I can see, all you need to do is point an A record to the IP (behind that menu), add the verification record to the root zone, and then just pick HTTP or HTTPs or both depending on your backend server. Likely, there's a field for ports (unless you get a single v6), where you can specify where your webserver is listening on.

  • Domain items are affected by IPv4 http (port 80) and https (port 443) references.
By adding the TXT record and A record as described, you can add a domain here, and this domain will be able to reference http/https using IPv4.

Other than that, 49300, which is shown in the item below, is open from the outside. This is the port for ssh (Note that the VPS sees it as connected on port 22), and probably 49301-49320 is the port you can use for other purposes. Set this to the port number that your server recognizes. This also affects IPv4.

This is the characteristic of NAT VPS and you can use it like any other VPS.

Please note this if you want to use a subdomain:

A TXT record is required for the root domain to prove ownership and should have the following value:

This means that you cannot easily set up a free subdomain provided by FreeDNS or GitHub users.
I checked and was able to set up EU.org. I think that VirtFusion, which FreeVPS.org uses, refers to the Public Suffix List as the domain range.
