This is not a defense of your product. Using an electron app to take screenshots is just wasteful. I don't need another electron app running in the background just to waste my RAM, have some shitty security vulnerabilities due to old chromium versions and in general be an absolute PITA.

    Also ShareX is free.

    Lol...

He is simply pointing to the obvious which you seem to construe as negative... which raises red flags on your product/ company on the whole.

It's not like your source code is open that someone can vet it... if you feel strongly about this, feel free to get an independent audit done / open-source your codebase.

I did not call your product shitty, I said that Electron has shitty security vulnerabilities since its based on Chromium, which needs to be kept constantly up to date. This escalates any XSS that you may have to RCE, which is a problem!

Okay I took a look. Turns out your product doesn't even need outdated Chromium versions to escalate any XSS into RCE:

        webPreferences: {
          nodeIntegration: true,
          contextIsolation: false,
          enableRemoteModule: true,

enableRemoteModule allows the webview to access electron modules directly, which means trivial RCE if you get XSS on the webview (i.e. with child_process).

In fact, electron has been telling people not to use this for years and years now: https://www.electronjs.org/docs/latest/breaking-changes#default-changed-enableremotemodule-defaults-to-false

So it seems as if you've just ignored their recommendations...

I did the equivalent of "view-source" on a webpage, my friend, I'm not sure why you think this is illegal (also, in which jurisdiction?)

Also I do love how you're deflecting the fact that I pointed our your lack of care for security by saying "well it was illegal for you to do that!"

Sure, move on buddy. Even now you are making it difficult for others to have a meaningful discussion with you (when pointed out vulnerability)...

Most of them actually. Attempting or Doing a reverse engineering is acceptable practise.
But revealing the working of software or any vulnerability on public forum is illegal and chargeable offense.

Nope, but I consult for top 10 software companies in the world, and am responsible for architecting critical software infra for some of them. After 15 years in Software Development, you pick few things. ;)

    Speculation... noice...

    Good luck 👍

But makes me wonder how can one consult so many companies (and for so long) and still end up having some code written which is not audited for vulnerabilities 🤔
And make a cry about legality...

    Interesting!!

Okay beyond the fact that "revealing how software works" is not illegal, I have not done that, this is a configuration setting for how you've configured electron. This is not technically a security vulnerability in itself, it's simply one part of a chain an attacker could leverage, what this does demonstrate is that you don't care for how secure your software is, which is a much bigger issue. Having security issues is expected, nobody can write perfectly secure software. On the other hand, actively choosing less secure options is much worse since it shows you don't actually care about security, which is a problem.

I can see why most big companies make insecure software now.

    1. Some settings do not work: for example "default filename" still uses the default value of soffware after install, even though it is modified.
    2. Keybind is by default configured to Ctrl+Shift+C, but this is also used by default to copy text from terminal. Maybe a solution would be to change it to Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C
    3. When editing, can't save a file neither with Copy, Save or with Save As, error: "An error occurred while saving your screenshot. Please try again. Error location: /home/[REDACTED]/SnapItFast-2023-10-16-16.43.15"
    4. Profiles in editing software can not be edited. After a profile is created, there is just the delete button on the right.

Even though I could not save any image with it (using just Linux), I find the idea of the software quite interesting. I would recommend to add some integration for other image hosting solutions (like IM.GE, Imgur, Gyazo) so that using an API the image is automatically uploaded onto these platforms.

    Thanks for the detailed feedback.
The issue with images might be just due to permission issues. Could you please change the default directory and/or restart the system and try once more.
The deb executable was tested on Ubuntu.

Tested for permissions. The error still persists.

If it helps, this is what happens when executing from terminal - however these errors appears at the beginning upon executing, not when attempting to save the image.

Apologies for the delay in distributing codes for Batch 5.
Codes for Batch 5 have been distributed now via DM.

It will be wonderful, if some of the winners can take some time to create lovely screenshots using SnapItFast and post in this thread. :)

    #We want more <3

    Seriously :)

  • Thank you for letting me try this app. I was in Batch 5.

This is one of the screenshot results

Review on how easy of use

    Installation

I am using macOS with apple silicon CPU, but I think it will the same with all other CPU as long as it using macOS Sonoma.

After installation you will get a little confused since it said it will "preparing" then the window is gone, and then back by itself after a few moments may be a minute. After put the login and password you will get a window what it can do.

When you click take screenshot now, it will ask you to let it access the record screen, which you have to add manually to the setting, but at least it points out where you should put the setting. You just need to look the app and put it there.

    Actual review

In my opinion, it is easy to use and makes the watermarking on screenshots easier to do.
yes, you can do that with the default app and then edit it on preview, in which at a certain point it is more customized since you can add more words or something like that.

While here you already have present what should be in the screenshot which on its purpose is really nice to have, and I like it because of that. You don't need to edit it manually on preview.

    Suggestion

    1. The number can manually adjust the number by write down the number directly on it.
    2. Please add Mastodon on the social media button since nowadays Mastodon is on the rise, so it will be nice to have it too.
    3. The possibility to add a picture manually so you can edit it with the SnapItFast. Since it would be nice to have a perfect window screen shoot and then edit it with the SnapItFast.

Thank you for letting me try it and I think I will use it a lot more than the default alt+cmd 3

  • SnapItFast! Social Media Ready Screenshots! 💥

  • Just an update, I was wrong turns out you can open a file and edit it with SnapItFast.

The menu was on the bar which was hidden since I have a lot of icons up there.

So suggestion 3 is already present on the app.
